Crime and Punishment

Should the punishment fit the crime, or as the old saying goes, "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." I think that the punishment should fit the crime because if it did we would not have the largest number of prison inmates in the world. The other reason for my thinking this way is that if the punishment fit the crime there would be less repeat offenders of the most heinous of crimes, such as rape and murder.

I would have to agree with that, but I was doing a project on it and the crime rate here in Canada actually dropped when the death penalty was abolished.
