Life has no meaning, that is unless meaning is put into it. If there is a "god" it doesnt matter because it is not involved in our lives. Good and bad do not exist just. humanity has just put a bunch of bullshit together to try and creat a "civilized society", but it doesnt matter because in the end we are animals. The Clean up

The natural environment is very important today and always has been. It helps sustain life in many different ways and as creatures that are supported by it, humans have an obligation to protect it. When I was in Boy Scouts many years back, my troop, and me did a community service project where we cleaned up behind a Knights of Columbus hall; the one we used for our meetings. Behind the hall were a few parking spaces, but those were not what we were there to clean up. At the edge of the parking lot, people had turned a very steep hill into a dumping site. Our job that day was to clean as much of that hill off as possible.
My mother dropped me off at the K of C early in the morning. When I got there, my troop leaders Mr. Smith and Mr. Dunne were already to go. Most of my troop was already there too, some of the kids were helping set up, and some others (my friends) were goofing off. I was happy to be there, not because of what I was doing but because I was with my friends and we could figure out a way to make things fun. We sorted out the rest of the equipment, put on our work gloves, and began cleaning. We planned on starting from the top and working our way down as far as we could. It was slow and *****g at this point and we spent most of the time talking or swinging on trees.
As we made our way down the hill foot by foot, the garbage that was there began getting bigger and bigger. It went from being things like bottles, napkins, old magazines, and scraps of rotting wood to things like tires and even refrigerators. As the trash got bigger so did our work effort. We had fun trying to drag up huge branches of fallen trees and grocery carriages from Walgreens and Stop and Shop. What we could see in this though was people’s lack of respect for the environment, no one cared what was being thrown down that hill. It was an unofficial city dump; the only difference was that there were still trees and animals on this hill. I really did not think of how bad it actually was when I was cleaning it, but now thinking back it was quite disgusting.
After making it about a quarter of the way down the hill, we stopped for a break. Mr. Dunne went off to get snacks while everyone else just hung around. We spent some of that down time screwing around with the shopping carts we had found. We also yelled down at the bums who apparently live towards the foot of the hill; we would see one walk around every now and then. I am sure they contributed to all the trash that had been thrown down there, mostly the bottles and probably the carriages. Finally Mr. Dunne returned, he had gone to Krispy Kreme Donuts and got about three dozen donuts. This was the first time I had ever had Krispy Kreme and I loved it. After the donuts were all gone we went back to cleaning again.
We were now pulling out some of the oddest things, scraps of twisted metal that might have been used for shelves, parts of washing machines, and a bunch of other miscellaneous items. There were also very large pieces of wood that looked almost like downed telephone poles midway down the hill. We tied ropes around them and all of us pulled as hard as we could to get the logs off that hill. We were able to do it, though I think we had to get a truck involved, but it was still a lot of work. Our troop leaders thought that it would be safer if we stopped in the middle of the hill. This was actually true; it was hard enough to climb up a quarter of the hill. In addition, the ho***ess people were down there and the leaders were afraid what they would possibly do. We stopped there, we had cleaned a very good portion of the hill, and it actually looked nice. After we were all gathered on the parking lot it was time for a picture. We gathered around one of the trucks and made our poses.
If I were to go back to that hill today, I know it would be as if we never cleaned it up. People just do not seem to care about that spot of land. Maybe it is because you cannot see it from the street or maybe because it is just a hill with no other purpose. All I know is that it is no longer clean. Do I feel like what I did was pointless? No, not really, because for however long it was clean it was clean because of my work. The thing that gets me though now that I think about it is why people can not just dispose of their garbage properly and leave nature be?

Intro:
My trip to the Enterprise Center turned out to be very beneficial for me, and I do believe it was a wise investment to send me there. I was able to see other beginning businesses and ones that were some what older. They were able to give me some insight on what it’s like starting a small business and how to keep it running. It was very interesting to see and hear this and I believe I got quite a bit out of it that I could bring to my organization.
Small Businesses:
After arriving and waiting for the tour to begin in the conference room we visited a management center for Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises. I learned that all the seventeen franchises that were run through there were all sole proprietorships but, there can be franchises set up as corporations. It was interesting to learn that just one place was responsible for managing almost twenty separate restaurants. Also that it was where all the bills were paid and the taxes were done. One thing I found really interesting is that every transaction made on the registers went to the office. Even more surprising was that before going to the office it went to the headquarters in California. Before this I had no idea that these franchises were managed by an outside office, I thought it all happened ion the restaurant itself.
Next I saw a graphic design company and learned about the advantages and disadvantages of being your own boss and running your own company. I found out that you don’t necessarily need to advertise your self to get high end customers or any kind for that matter. All you really need to do is do a good job and you will get your promotions by word of mouth. I also learned that even though a company may put you in charge of something, in this case logo and sign designs, you still have to respect the reputation of the company and make the work appropriate. These are just a few examples of the other companies that were working in the Enterprise center.
Financial Planning:
One bit of information I found to be extre***y valuable is that, with a good plan, persistence, and a good understanding of what you are doing it is possible to get money from all over. The Center has a contest for business plans where, from my understanding, the winner receives a spot at the center and $10,000. This is a very good thing for anyone planning on starting their own small business to know. Also the Center has a financial planning program that is fee. This is a great thing that anyone could take advantage of.
In Conclusion:
The entire trip to the Enterprise center was very informative. I believe I can take what I learned and use it to improve my own organization. Also it is good to know that there are people their and programs that can be used to help make the process of starting a running a small business much easier.

heres a question regarding existance i guess you could say.

physics is one of the biggest opponents to religion, its almsot baisically proven that "god" does not excist due to many different things. but the thing is physics has to me what seems to be a few of there own "god" figures.

i.e. thinmgs like strange matter and time travel. these things are said to exist.... in theory. there is no actual phsycal proof that these things exist or can happen, except for equations. no actual observations have been made.

so my question is, for people obbsesed with finding out the truth by means of physical evidence, why do the choose to believe that things such as strange matter exist, when the are so sure "god" does not?

personally i like clubs, though i do like some stadium shows for acts like Rob Zombie because he just puts ona crazy stage show.

But i love clubs, cus you they're geneal admission, and they are just more fun.

your like 10ft from the band, if you're not smashed up against the stage trying not to get crushed by a hundered other people just pushing eachother.

depending on the band the sound quality is usually better.

Okay so this is just a question out of curiousity.

yesterday i was watching "shock wave" on the history channel. They were showing a oil silo thing that was on fire. Now aparently at the bottom of these silo thinghs there is water.

What they then pointed out was that there was steam comeing from the a crack in the top of the silo, as the steam came out, it started to turn into fire.

I dont mean the fir was like mixing with the steam i mean the steam starte to ignite.

Im curious to know, why this happened, was it because the steam was mixed with oil? Or was the water becomeing so hot it actually combusted into flames?

god damn it! i just got done listening to "mother mary" by foxboro hot tub the greenday side progect and, god it made me want to bash my head of the desk. seriously greenday was good, for a pop punk band, but shit once they started with....... what was their last album, the rock opra one.. with the grenade heart? well w/e bands are going to hell.

take blink182 for example, a fantastic pop punk band following in the foorsteps of bands like the vandals and the dickies, but they went to shit when they came out with take off your pants and jacket, although a few really good songs did come out of that.

then you have sum 41 like blink a good pop punk band, but went to hell when they came out with chuck (how the fuck do i remeber that cd... i have it somewhere) ive heard their latest single... its okay.

SHIT FUCK even good charlotte was smei decent (even though they are the biggest posers ever OMG LIKE GAWD) when they first started out.. that song "the little things" was fun.

Korn is another example of a band that went to shit. see you on the other side just killed it for them.

system of a down too, really their best cd was their very first "system of a down" although toxicity was really good, but their last two cds were leading to a slipery slope.

but w/e atleast there are still some bands and artist who are still pumping out some really good shit after the years: tim armstrong, the mighty mighty bosstones, big d and the kids table, reel big fish, robby roadsteamer.

okay so ive been caught blazeing 4 times, the first time sucked i was in boston and got a call from my mom, and wound up bgetting grounded for about 6 months.

the next time i got caught was because i almost lit the house on fire because i was bord and was just playing with fire, but then my mom braught me to the hospital for mental eval, and i got a drug test, didnt get introuble at all.

third time, i got back from a concert and decided to finish my half gram or northern lights, walked in the house, mom was waiting grounded for four months.

now just over vacation my mom walks into my room while im ripping the bong out my window. get kicked out of the house for a night, have to throw away my bong and over an 1/8 of headies. (it was a quarter but i had it for about three days) then get back to the house tell my mom im not stoping punched she said stuff i punched a hole in my door and leave for a while.

now ive lost the truck i was going to get and iu had to pay my inmissions fee for college $250 but, i think thats all..... i mean it sucks but....
now my mom wants me to get another job so i can buy a car and go out with my friends..... what? im not complaining this is awsome, but just wierd. im 18 she could have easily kicked me out of the house, not payed for any of my college, called the cops, theres a number of things.

personally i already have a plan for something like this

id take one of my swords and a bow, and if i could get one of the riffles working id take that too

id then take the cammper or walk depending on weather im dealing with regular zombies or the ones in this movie.

id then go to dicks sporting goods, has a shit load of guns, ammo, bows, arrows, other stuff that can kill, and enough trial mix and cliff hanger bars to lats a year, plus its right next to the mall that has a target and a stop and shop so foods not really a problem.

id stay there for a while turning it into a fort and makeing a b***** over to the mall some how. (also if i can get an opening id fence off a good portion of the parking lot for a bufferzone.

after i fortife the place i would set off towards the airforce base or air port and get a helicoper.

i would then take that to the kittery tradeing post in Maine because they have enough guns to support a small army, this would take a few trips but itll be worth it in the long run.

after i stalked up on all the weapons id probably go out, either in a fortified vehichle or in the choper or just walk. and find a dealers house and jack all there drugs.

then id go back to dicks and chill, probably start growing mad bud on the roof and learn some chemistry and sword and gun smithing.

hipefully there will be some other survivors to come and keep me company

WHAT YOU NEED:
--------------

o Ammonium Nitrate (NH4NO3) - get a good grade, it's a fertilizer and comes
in 50lb. bags. Also available from lab supply companies like VW&R or
American Scientific at a much greater cost.

o Clean sand. Fairly fine grained (30 mesh or finer.) If you collect your
and you get fresh water sand, it will be necessary to wash it thoroughly
with water then dry it before using. You must also wash the sand before
reusing it.

o Electric hot plate (500 to 2500 watt) with variable heat.

o Stainless steel dial thermometer. (This is the only metal item which may
be used.) It must go to 250 C (450 F). Select the Erlenmeyer flask (next
item) and the thermometer so that the thermometer can reach at least
within 1/16" of the bottom of the flask through the stopper.

o A 2000 to 4000 ml PYREX or KIMAX Erlenmeyer flask.

o Several feet of 3/8" clear vinyl or surgical rubber tubing.

o At least 4 8mm ID glass or plastic tubing "T's".

o 1 120 degree bend 8mm ID PYREX glass elbow, with about 3" of tubing on
each side of the bend.

o 7 6-8" long pieces of 8mm ID glass or plastic tubing.

o 3 6-8 feet long 1.5" to 2" diameter glass or clear plastic pipes.

o 1 two hole rubber or neoprene stopper to fit the top of the Erlenmeyer
flask. One hole should fit the 8mm ID PYREX glass elbow, and the other
hole should fit the stainless steel dial thermometer.

o 6 one hole rubber or neoprene stoppers that will fit the ends of the
clear plastic or glass pipes. The holes in the stoppers must fit the
straight 8mm ID glass or plastic tubes.

------

If you've gotten this far - remember - you MUST meet the exact quiality
specifications of the equipment list. If you really want a do-it-yourself
nitrous oxide generator, you want a sturdy set-up you can over and over and
enjoy again and again!

Assembly
--------

NOTE: When inserting tubing through stopper holes, ALWAYS WRAP AND HOLD THE
TUBING WITH A CLOTH. Also moisten the tip of the tubing and the
stopper hole with glycerin, soap, or spit. (never oil)

1> Into the stopper with two holes, inset the thermometer far enough so
that when the stopper is put into the Erlenmeyer flask, it almost
touches the bottom of the flask (but don't allow it to touch), and then
insert one end of the glass elbow far enough through the stopper so that
it sticks out 1/4" to 1/2".

2> Into the six one-hole stoppers, insert a piece of the 8mm ID glass (or
plastic) tubing so that 1/2" to 3/4" protrudes from the narrow end of
the stopper.

3> Now select your set-up space so that there is 1.5 feet of space clear in
all directions around the hotplate, so that the three scrubber pipes can
lie side by side where they will not be knocked over.

4> Take approximately 2 feet of the 3/8" flexible tubing and connect
one end to the glass elbow in the two-hole stopper, and the other end to
the middle of one of the 8mm ID glass (or hard plastic) "T's".

5> With short pieces (select lengths for a neat fit) of 3/8" tubing and
another 8mm "T" assemble the INLET SET manifold and connect it to the
bottom end of the scrubbers. Stoppers may then be inserted into the
lower end of the scrubber pipes.

6> Elevate the OUT end of the scrubber pipes so that the upper end is 6" to
8" above the IN end, but no more, and then fill the pipes with water
until they are full within 4" to 8" of the top (outlet) end, and insert
the outlet stoppers. Try to fill all the scrubbers equally full.

7> With short pieces of 3/8" tubing and two 8mm ID "T's", prepare and
connect the OUTLET SET manifold to the scrubbers similar to the way the
set was connected in step 5.

8> To the last "T" of the OUTLET SET (of "T's" manifold), connect a fairly
long piece of 3/8" tubing to reach a "safe" location (where connection
and disconnection of the receiver bags will not disturb the scrubbers)
and secure it. Then put the last piece of 8mm ID hard tubing into the
free end.

9> Finally, prepare several receiever bags by inserting about an 8" piece
of tubing into the top so that 3" or 4" sticks out of the bag and secure
it in place with a rubber band.

Operation
---------

First, prepare a quantity of a mixture containing 1/3 sand and 2/3
ammonium nitrate. Then pour enough of the mixture into the erlenmeyer flask
to give 1.5" to 2" in the bottom of the flask. Put the flask onto the
hotplate, and insert the two-hole stopper, firmly but not too tight. < stopper is your safety valve while the system is operating.>> --BUT--

Now you may begin heating the flask. Turn the hotplate to medium or
medium-high and watch the thermometer. If the temperature climbs very fast,
turn the hotplate down, but be patient about turning it up. Occasional
bubbles will be noted going through the scrubbers as the air in the system
expands. At 210 C (410 F) a yellowish to orange-brown will begin filling
the flask, and the bubbling throught the scrubbers will become steady.

At this time, adjust the upper end heights of the scrubber tubes so that
each one gets about the same amount of gas passing through it. Keep your
eye on the temperature, and it should not climb much over the 210-220 C
(410-430 F) marks. Also the gas at the top of the scrubbers MUST BE
PERFECTLY COLORLESS! Otherwise, turn down the heat setting. If the gas flow
is too low to give a steady flow throught all three scrubbers, increase the
heat slightly.

Once you've run your system a time or two, you'll know what your
operating settings are.

As soon as the gas flow is steady and clean, connect a receiving bag to
the final outlet tube, and allow the bag to fill. It may be necessary to
add more amonium nitrate-sand mixture to the flask from time to time -- wear
gloves as the flask will be HOT when removing the stopper. It is also a
good idea to turn off the hotplate while the stopper is out of the flask.

Once you've filled a few bags with laughing gas, you're ready to try some.
Just inhale from the bag and hold it in as long as you can. You'll know
what to do from there.

It's also rumored that use of marijuana, hash, cocaine, LSD or various
other drugs will intensify and lengthen the nitrous oxide experience. It
might also be possible that repeated inhalations of nitrous oxide may cause
a more intense reaction.

My predictions:

Mixing nitrous oxide inhalations with the use of:

Marijuana: euphoric state approximating an intensified marijuana 'high'.
Hashish: a great happiness and cheer overwhelms you for about an hour.
Cocaine: TREMENDOUS paranoia and depression.
LSD: heightened senses and awareness. Hallucinations involving whipped
cream.
Alchohol: hopefully cause immediate death. There's no excuse to use
alchohol when there are so many other more effective and tastier drugs.

simple DXM extraction

this is a simple one, once i can get onto the other site ill put the better one up but for now....

Tussin Cough Syrup. basically a cough syrup where the only active ingredient is Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide (DXM HBr). Syrups containing Guaifenesin may also be used, but no other active ingredients should be present. Robitussin Dm worked fine for me, get the larger size for more product

ammonia- Can be found in any grocery store as floor cleaner. Get only clear, non-sudsy ammonia. (will be labled as non-sudsy)

Naphtha- This is a petroleum product professionaly used by woodworkers as a solvent and is an ingredient in lighter fluid. If there is a paint store near you, go there and buy VM&P Naphtha (Varnish Maker's & Painters). This is pure naphtha, and the best product to use. Zippo or Ronsonol lighter fluid also may be used, and worked fine for me.

lemonon Juice- Realemon brand or generic equivalent . *Countrytime lemonade can be used in it's place if you are making agent lemon liquid, but lemon juice is required to make lemnot alloweds. See Lucidity's Simplified Method for details on how to use Countrytime.

Glass Carafe or Pan- Yes, it has to be glass. Most grocery stores sell The Whistler for around $10.

Ziplock Freezer Bags- or generic equivalent- get the big ones. Don't be cheap, get ziplock double zipper bags

Large Glass Bottle- of grapefruit juice. Drinking grapefruit juice before taking DXM helps inhibit the enzyme that converts DXM to DXO, which means your trip should be enhanced. You will use the bottle to shake your mixture, so make sure you get the largest bottle you can find, and make sure it is glass.

Glass Jar- about the size of a pasta sauce jar. make sure it is clean!

Scissors

A Stove or microwave. See Lucidity's Simplified Method for details on how to use a microwave instead of a stove, but for our method, we use a stove.

-Additional Materials Needed to Make Lemnot alloweds-

Gelatin Capsules- can be purchased online or at many health food stores, or you can buy a suppliment that comes in capsule form and dump out the powder inside to use the caps.

Plastic Drinking Straw- regular-sized straw.

-INSTRUCTIONS-

Step 1. Extracting the DXM from the Cough Syrup

Take your clean, empty glass grapefruit juice bottle and pour your tussin syrup inside. Add to it an equal amount of ammonia. No need to be exact, just eye it. Put the lid on the bottle and shake that mixture vigorously for about 3 minutes. The DXM molecules have now been bound to the ammonia molecules.

Step 2. Extracting the DXM from the Ammonia

Open your bottle back up and add some naphtha. Use about 1/10 the amount of Naphtha to the amount of liquid that is currently in the bottle, usually around a quarter to half inch of naphtha. Put the lid back on and shake that mixture for 6 minutes. The naphtha has seperated the DXM from the ammonia, and the DXM molecules are now bound to the naphtha's.

Step 3. Seperation #1

After you are done shaking your mixture, pour what you have in your bottle into a Ziplock freezer bag, and hang it up using thumbtacks. You should see your product begin to seperate almost immediately, and after 5 minutes it should look like this:

The clear top layer is your naphtha layer which contains the DXM. The bottom layer is your ammonia/syrup layer which you will discard. If using a Guaifenesin-containing syrup, you might experience a bubbly, oily layer between your naphtha and ammonia layers. If this happens, just wait an extra 5 minutes for those bubbles to settle.

Step 4. Draining your Product

Make sure you are outside or in a well-ventilated room and have your bottle and jar handy. Carefully take down your bag and hold it by one corner. Hold the bottom corner of your bag over the mouth of your bottle, and with your scissors snip a tiny hole in the corner of your bag so the bottom layer slowly drains into your bottle. When your naptha layer gets close, get ready to pinch the opening of the bag. make sure every last bit of red stuff drains, and when a tiny bit of naphtha leaks out, pinch the bag shut and drain the rest of it into your glass jar. Inspect your naphtha in the jar for little red bubbles. You want to make sure there is no ammonia in your product because ammonia is toxic. If you see any bubbles in your product, dump the contents of your jar into a fresh Ziplock bag and hang it up for a few minutes. The bubbles will now have settled into the bottom corner of your bag, which you can snip and drain. Now empty your naphtha back into your jar.

Step 5. Extracting the DXM from the Naphtha

Grab your jar and your lemon juice, and add an equal amount of lemon juice as you have naphtha into the jar. Put the lid on your jar and shake that mixture vigorously for 6 minutes. The lemon juice has now unbound the DXM molecules from the naphtha's.

Step 6. Seperation #2

When you are done shaking your naphtha/lemon juice mixture, take a fresh Ziplock bag and pour the contents of your jar into it. Hang the bag by it's corner. If you are making agent lemon and have chosen to use Lucidity's Countrytime Method, the seperation should take about 15 minutes. If you are making lemnot alloweds or have used lemon juice, the seperation usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. Leave the product to seperate for at least 45 min in this case. Your seperation should look like this:

Now the lemon juice has seperated from the naphtha, and your DXM/lemon juice product is the bottom layer while the naptha layer, which you will discard, is on top.

**note: some experience cloudyness or foaming in their product especially when using lighter fluid instead of pure naphtha, which makes the seperation look more like this-

If your seperation looks like this, don't worry - it's still usable. It is just harder to distinguish between the layers because the seperation is so faint . When you drain this in the next step, be sure to do it slowly and in a well-lit area so you can follow the seperation.

Step 7. Draining your Product

Ready your jar, which you should have washed and dried well, and your bottle. Place them side-by-side. Take your bag, and again snip a tiny hole in it's corner to allow the bottom lemon juice/DXM layer to drain slowly into your jar. As the naptha layer approaches, get ready to pinch the bag closed. When 99.9% of the bottom layer has drained into your jar, pinch the bag closed and empty the remaining naphtha layer into your bottle. The contents of the bottle should now be disposed of properly.

Step 8. Boiling and Cooling your Mixture

Take the contents of your jar and empty it into your glass pan or carafe. Put your pan on the stove and turn the heat on to just over medium-high. Let your lemon slowly come to a boil and watch it carefully. If you let it get too hot quickly, your lemon juice can come to a furious boil allowing some to splash out of your pan, and you don't want this to happen because you are losing DXM, so watch your product carefully as it boils. It is helpful to take the pan off the stove every minute or so, and swirl the mixture around by carefully shaking the pan in a circular motion- be careful not to spill! You should boil this mixture for at least 5 minutes to make agent lemon. Your liquid will evaporate down to a couple of ounces or so, but we recommend boiling your product down to about an ounce if you plan on drinking the agent lemon liquid. This stuff really tastes disgusting, so the less you have to drink, the better. If you are making Lemnot alloweds, go on to Step 9. If you are making Agent Lemon liquid to drink, proceed here - Drain what you have back into your cleaned jar, put the lid on, and hold the jar under a cold water faucet for a minute - this will help speed-up the cooling process, and you want to drink your agent lemon cold, there is less of a gag-reflex that way - place the jar in the ref*****rator for 15 minutes. Your product will look similar to this:

Now you have made Agent Lemon! Just drink the mixture, and have a good trip! ) This is the best way to do it..... quicker than filling and dosing caps

Scientists in Britain are proposing a complete revamping of drug classifications in the wake of findings that reveal some major discrepancies between a drug's legality and its safeness. A study surveying health, crime and science professionals regarding the dangers of a set of 20 legal and illegal drugs, published in The Lancet in March 2007, found that alcohol and tobacco, which are legal in Britain and the United States, are considered by experts to be more dangerous than ecstasy and marijuana, which are illegal in both countries.

In Britain, under the Misuse of Drugs Act, illegal drugs (including prescription drugs sold on the street) are classified as A, B or C. Class A is supposed to be the most harmful, and Class C is supposed to be the least harmful. For instance, heroin is a class A drug, and marijuana is a class C drug. The study was intended to achieve harm rankings for 20 drugs, 15 illegal substances and five legal substances that have shown potential for harm, using a systematic, scientific approach. The researchers surveyed two separate groups of experts including medical doctors, mental health professionals, scientists and forensics experts. Each group returned similar ranking results for the 20 drugs based on three primary features:

* physical harm to the person using the drug
* the drug's potential for abuse and/or dependence
* the drug's ill effects on society

The results, shown below, revealed some apparent inconsistencies in Britain's drug-classification system.

Probably the most notable discrepancy is the position of alcohol, a legal drug, at 13 places above ecstasy, an illegal, class A drug. And LSD, also a class A drug, was ranked considerably less harmful than benzodiazepines, a class C group of drugs.

The results seem to call into question exactly which method the British government is using to determine the relative harmfulness of drugs. According to the authors of the study, "Tobacco and alcohol together account for about 90 percent of all drug-related deaths in the U.K." Yet both of those substances are legal. In the United States, a study published in the journal of the American Medical Association in 2000 shows that 95 percent of drug-related deaths in the United States are from alcohol and tobacco use.

With little documentation that attempts to explain the current governmental ranking criteria, the study proposes a method for classifying drugs that uses scientific assessment. The classifications would be based on the three indicators of harm as presented to experts in the study -- personal, physical harm; abuse/dependence potential; and social harm. In the study, the rankings for each of the criterion were combined, with the researchers taking the mean of the three scores, to obtain the overall rankings listed above.

Of course, the legal status of drugs like alcohol and tobacco skews the results. Their legal status makes them far more available, so an accurate side-by-side comparison with a drug like heroin on all three criteria is impossible. Availability will always affect social effects of any given drug. Drugs that are easily available, legal and non-stigmatized logically will result in more widespread use, more adverse reactions and more money spent on police assistance and/or hospital care as a result of those adverse reactions.

Still, availability most likely wouldn't skew the abuse potential or the personal, physical harm associated with a drug. So the study does at least reveal some possible inconsistencies in British (and U.S.) drug law. Ultimately, the researchers believe that the foundations of drug policy need to be more transparent, since those foundations effect everything from public education to criminal sentences to treatment programs to methods of control and enforcement. They point out that without a clear, scientific basis for determining a drug's legal status and harmfulness, it's hard to establish credibility in the policies that dictate how a "drug war" is carried out, and it's hard to determine how effective those policies really are.
