Since most people here seem to lack physical knowledge, or any knowledge at all, I will try to explain the basics of projectile weapons here. If you think something is missing, something is wrong, or something is unclear, let me know.

Impact
The basic principle behind projectiles is impact; something impacts with an amount of energy, and it either hits the target and bounces off it, or it hits the target and penetrates in it. The difference between bouncing back or penetrating is the area over which force is applied to the target. The more you sharpen an edge, the more likely it is to penetrate. The key to damage is the energy contained in a projectile; the more energy, the higher the impact. The more energy, the deeper the penetration. Since most penetrating weapons are relatively light, their energy is mainly determined by the speed at which they travel. I’ll focus on the main purpose here (i.e. you can break somebody’s skin with a sharp rock, thus penetrating into the body. However, much more damage is done by the impact.)

Energy contained (momentum) in a projectile is determined by both mass and speed of the projectile. Impact is determined by the force (F) with which the projectile hits the target times the time it takes (Δt) to hit the target. The shape of the projectile doesn’t have anything to do with the impact, only with the probability of penetrating.

-Momentum; p = mv
(Δp = mΔv)
(Δp = vΔm) Very unlikely to occur, since mass usually doesn’t change.
-Impact; I = ∫FΔt = Δp
(∫FΔt = mΔv)
Note that mass (m) can be any value, it just can’t change in mid-air, while velocity (v) can.

Thrown weapons
With thrown weapons, the main problem is lack of accuracy, not lack of power. All the energy put into them is put there by your arm, so it’s dependent on your strength. There are two types of thrown weapon; weapons with impact, and weapons who penetrate. With the first type, you can think of basically anything you can pick up and throw with relative ease (or a so called “ill-prepared man’s weapon”); rocks, bricks, baseballs, etc. This is fairly inaccurate over a longer distance, and easy to sidestep. If they hit, however, the result will be bruising, leading up to concussion and broken bones.

The main goal of a penetrating thrown weapon is to hit something with the sharp part of the weapon. For this, you need either lots of practice or a weapon with a lot of sharp parts. You also have to pay attention to the movement of the weapon; you can throw a shuriken knife over a short distance with in a relatively straight line, but if you need to throw it far, it will fall to the ground fairly fast. Throwing stars spin, so they follow a straight trajectory for a longer distance. All over all, thrown weapons can do a fair deal of damage in the hands of a trained user, in close combat, but for longer range attacks, they are pretty much useless. If you hit somebody correctly, the result will be excessive bleeding, and it might cause some permanent damage in cutting though muscles.

p = mv, where both m and v are variable. This makes the momentum very hard to predict.

Bows and arrows
With a bow, you gain accuracy, but you lose impact. The impact is less necessary though, since arrows are mostly designed to penetrate. In a bow, energy from your arm is stored in the string, and released into the arrow. This takes out the need for you to add speed to the projectile, the bow does this for you. Shooting with a bow takes some practice, but it's fairly easy to hit a target. Correctly hitting a target will result in a penetration between 2 and 5 centimeters, depending on the type of bow used, and the tips on the arrows.

p = mv, where v is relatively constant, but dependant on a variable m, the higher m is, the lower v is.

Crossbows and bolts
This works basically the same as a regular bow, only it’s string can contain more energy, and thus it has greater impact. This means that, where an arrow will just penetrate, a crossbow bolt will rip the target open.

↑p = m↑v, where the increase in velocity (v) is directly proportional to the increase in momentum (p).

Firearms
In firearms, the energy comes from chemical substances, which detonate to propel a projectile towards a target. This has to do with the expansion of gasses and the pressure it produces, I will post a topic on this in the Pyro-section in the next week.

There are two kinds of acetone peroxide: the dimer, which is extre***y unstable and less powerful, and the trimer, which is less sensitive, and more powerful.

3(CH3)2CO + 3H2O2 → C9H18O6 + 3H2O

You take acetone and hydrogen peroxide, and mix them in a beaker. Add a strong acid like hydrochloric acid, chloric acid, perchloric acid, or sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The colder the reaction, the more trimer will form. (And yes, we want the trimer). Let is sit in the f***** overnight, and after 24 hours white crystals will form. Filter the crystals out of the solution, and pour ammonia over them until they stop bubbling. Now, they are pH neutral. Filter it again.

Important:
-This is a high explosive. Treat it with respect.
-Keep the reaction as cool as possible. Ammonium nitrate with water will drain heat from the reaction, thus cooling the reaction. For the rest of the cooling rely on the f*****. It might be smart to place the beakers in the freezer before the production, and to place them in the f***** after adding the acid to the solution.

Alrighty then, guess who's back to educate some retards? Todays subject is AnCa Wax, a variation on my previous recipe for AnWax.

You take 97% of Ammonium nitrate, ***t 3% of paraffin wax, and mix the Ammonium nitrate with the liquid paraffin. Now you have AnWax, but it's still overoxidized. Take some powdered calcium (aluminium works too, but that would make the name AnAl Wax), and add it to the mixture. You can add almost any amount, but when you keep raising the amount of calcium, eventually the detonation will not produce any more energy.

Enjoy, hope you use this stuff to kill yourself.

This is a very dangerous substance, doesn't really belong in pyro, but since it's too dangerous for Bullshit, and it can make organic substances...

This is a very dangerous substance, doesn't really belong in pyro, but since it's too dangerous for Bullshit, and it can make organic substances explode, I'll just post it here. Do NOT try to do this at home, this stuff can burn through your skin in a matter of seconds.

This is one of the most aggressive chemical compounds known (read as: you can make yourself). It's made from 3 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid, and one part 30% hydrogen peroxide. This stuff can destroy HF-proof glass, so I suggest using ordinary glass. You'll have to pour the H2O2 into the acid. Any organic matter that comes in contact with this stuff can explode (alcohol, for instance, but also skin).

You'll need:
-some glass beakers (regular glass, not HF-proof)
-15 ml of 99% H2SO4
-5 ml of 30% H2O2
-an ANORGANIC surface you can place the glass on (don't use wood or plastic)

What to do:
-Place the beakers on the anorganic surface
-Pour the H2SO4 into a beaker
-Wait for a few minutes, then pour the H2O2 in the same beaker as the H2SO4
-Mix it CAREFULLY with a glass stirring rod.

Now you've made piranha solution. Only make this stuff when you have a good, immediate use for it. I used it to examine the effects of various acids, bleaches, and bases on human skin (actually, pork skin, but it's almost similar to human skin).

Now, for safety reasons:

Handling

* Always use glass (preferably Pyrex) containers. Piranha will ***t plastics.
* Mix the solution in a hood with the sash between you and the solution. Wear gloves and eye protection.
* When preparing the piranha solution, always add the peroxide to the acid.
* Piranha solution is very energetic and potentially explosive. It is very likely to become hot, more than 100 degrees C. Handle with care.
* Leave the hot piranha solution in an open container until cool.
* Never store piranha solutions. Piranha stored in a closed container will likely explode.
* Adding any acids or bases to piranha or spraying it with water will accelerate the reaction. This includes Photoresist, which is a strong base.
* Mixing hot piranha with organic compounds may cause an explosion. This includes acetone, photoresist, isopropyl alcohol, and nylon
* Aspirate the piranha and dispose via the drain when finished.

Storage

Do not store piranha. Mix fresh solution for each use. Excess solutions should be disposed via the drain, followed by flushing with copious amounts of water.

Disposal

Do not collect for disposal. After the material has cooled, aspirate excess piranha and dispose via the drain, flushing the drain with copious amounts of water.

WARNING: Me and my friends are to be considered professional pyrotechnicians, and we insist that you do not try to reproduce such a device as shown above, unless you are an experienced pyrotechnician. Furthermore, I recommend that you use a remote detonator, and keep a distance of at least 500 meter (believe me, you'll still see the blast). Last but not least, I suggest using ear protection, when we set off the "Craterer", it was heard in a range of 5 kilometer (!!!). There weren't much troubles with the cops, because we managed to get a explosive-license for that day. If you try to reproduce this, be sure to also ask a licence (bombs this heavy could easily be a reason to get sent to jail for a very long time).[/img]

At first, I'd like to say that THESE AREN'T REAL SHAPED CHARGES. Real shaped charges are very difficult to make, even for real pyrotechnicians. These devices act in a way similar to shaped charges, but are much simpler.

You'll need:
-A metal container, made from a metal with a high ***ting point, with two caps at both ends, to close it off.
-A bar of metal, with a ***ting point lower than the container.
-A primary explosive (just to set it off).
-A high explosive (I suggest AP).
-A fuse, a detonator, or anything else that makes it go off.

First, screw a cap onto one end of the container, then fill the container with the HE, until there's about 1 inch on the bottom of the container. Then put the metal bar in the middle, and surround it with the rest of the HE. Put the primer on top of that, and connect the primer to the detonator (I suggest using a remote detonator, because you can put it into the container, without a fuse sticking out). Screw the other cap on the other end of the container. You should now have something that looks very similar to a pipe bomb, and actually, this is a pipe bomb, only with metal in it. The difference between shaped charges and pipe bombs is that with a pipe bomb, there is a pressure build-up before an explosion, and with a shaped charge, all the heat from the HE is directed to the metal bar, which will eventually ***t itself through the container, and launch a spray of hot metal towards a target.

WARNING: WHEN USING A SHAPED CHARGE, YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. IF A SHAPED CHARGE ISN'T PROPERLY MADE, IT COULD AS WELL LAUNCH THE METAL IN ANY RANDOM DIRECTION.
