AK-47 Type I. Mikhail's baby, note the milled/stamped received hybrid, and oddly shaped pistol grips and handguards. Produced 1947-1959.

AK-47 Type II. Note the fully milled receiver (look behind the barrel at the built in trunnion, and in the place where the stock and pistol grip meet the receiver.) Produced 1953-197?

AK-47 Type III. Externally similar to the Type II, differs only in internal construction. These are the ones most commonly found in third world countries as they are the most reliable of the AK series, and were shipped around to shitholes where the soviets knew they would not be cleaned. The AKM varient was only adopted because it was cheaper to manufacture. Produced 195?-198?

AKM-47
This is the version most people in western countries are familiar with. Stamped receiver (look for rivets), ridges on the topcover, and the less pronounced vents on the gas tube.
