I had a thought today...<br />

Substances are coloured because of the frequencies of visible light they absorb and reflect, and when we perceive something to be coloured it is because the light absorbed corresponds to the energy it takes to promote a substance's electrons to a higher energy level etc and the light reflected from the substance in visible light makes it coloured.<br />
<br />
So the question is, are things 'coloured' when they are in the absolute dark, or when light isn't shining on them, or is everything absolutely colourless in the dark? <br />
