Here on Earth we are completely oblivious to the grand scale of things in the universe. Much in the same way we perceive dust particles as being insignificant, universally speaking we are little more than dust in the wind. The actual scale of things is incomprehensible; just thinking about how insignificant we are really bring things into perspective.
- This question...

I found this somewhat interesting and was wondering what you thought.

Can God create a rock so heavy that he cannot lift it?

- This question is often used as evidence against the existence of God. The argument goes like this:

•If God can create a rock too heavy to lift, then he is not omnipotent because he cannot lift a certain rock.

•If God cannot create a rock too heavy to lift, then he is not omnipotent because he is unable to create a certain rock.

Either way, he is not omnipotent, and therefore cannot exist, or at least can no longer be called God.

Superficially, this seems like a pretty damning argument against the existence of God, who is invariably described as omnipotent - nothing is beyond his power.

Nothing, that is, except the logically impossible. And I think that is where this argument falls down. It is asking whether or not God can do the logically impossible, which is a totally meaningless question, and therefore of no use one way or another.

For example, consider these similar questions :

•Can God make a vehicle which moves so fast that he cannot catch it?
•Can God draw a picture so small that he cannot see it?
•Can God bake a cake so large that he cannot eat it?
•Can God make a star so bright that he cannot look at it?

These could easily be used in place of the Heavy Rock question, but are unfortunately just as meaningless. Apart from the basic problem of where God would stand in order to lift the rock, or what the rock would itself stand on, the question amounts to "Can God do something that God cannot do?" or "Can God find the limits of his unlimited abilities?" which are logically incoherent. This is called a fallacy of Contradictory Premises, as one statement contradicts the other ("God's abilities are unlimited" vs. "God's abilities are limited").

You may as well ask

•Can God make a circular triangle?
•Can God create a colour that he cannot s***l?
•Can God formulate a proof of his own non-existence?
•Can God outrun himself?
•Can God cauliflower?

These questions can be asked, but just because a question can be asked does not mean that it has any value, or is deserving of any sort of response.

•What flavour is Thursday?

•Why do bananas enjoy driving tractors?

You can string a bunch of words together to make a syntactically valid question, but if the question is meaningless then what use is it? That, I think, is the case with the Heavy Rock dilemma - it is based on a logical impossibility ("Can God do what God cannot do?") and just becomes so much pointless word-play.

Even slightly more sophisticated examples like
Can God create a being equal to himself?
fall into the same trap. This one sounds good at first, but the problem here is that God is, allegedly, un-created. He has always existed. How could God create a being that has not been created? It appears valid at first, but God not being able to do something that cannot be done and is logically impossible is hardly evidence against God.

Another way of looking at it is like this:

1.Can God do the impossible?
~~~~~Yes (if you are referring to things that are simply impossible for nonomnipotent beings like us, like holding a picnic inside the sun).
2.Can God do the possible?
~~~~~Of course (although beings like us may not be able to).

3.Can God do the logically impossible?
~~~~~No, because they are not "there" to be done. Circular triangles and so on. The question itself is unlikely to make much sense.
The Heavy Rock question may work as an attention-getter, and waken the theist to the fact that people ask awkward questions about their deity. They may believe "With God, all things are possible", but you may make them understand that this does not include the logically impossible, and simply saying "God can do anything he wants to" doesn't cut the mustard. However, as a convincing proof against a God it fails pretty quickly. Atheists should realise the problems with it before relying on it in an argument, otherwise they are likely to be shot down in flames by any reasonably savvy opponent. There are far stronger and more coherent logical arguments against the existence of Gods (free will vs. omniscience, gratuitous evil vs. omnibenevolence, and so on).
Those who enter into "battle" with a Christian, wielding the Rock argument as their only weapon, are going to be about as successful as the naive young evangelist who thinks all he need do is say "Jesus loves you", and atheists will convert and rush to the nearest church like lemmings.
It's probably unusual for an atheist to criticise a commonly-used argument against God, but I really don't think the Rock problem is a valuable addition to our arsenal except maybe as a counter to the "God can do whatever the heck he likes" assertion.
If an omnipotent God exists, then it can do anything, as long as that action is logically possible.
What are your thoughts on this?
I know there have been many threads on aliens already, but I am taking a different approach to the matter with this thread. My question is are we ready as a society to make contact with interplanetary beings. This brings to mind the question what would happen if we made contact? We as a society have never dealt with any other sentient being besides other humans. How would humanity react to a hyper intelligent life form; would we feel threatened? Contact with another equally intelligent or more advanced civilization would be difficult to grasp, and even more difficult to think of the effects this would have on our species. In the past we have not been the most accepting of others different from us, even when they are the same species, so how would we react to a species from an entirely different planet or galaxy?
I would like to discuss the aspects of what defines intelligent life, are we the only intelligent beings in existence, or have we set the bar too high. The question at hand is, "what really is intelligence?" I know this is quite a broad question, but it needs a definite answer, and so far not one of the answers given by society has truly satisfied the sceptics who believe that we, as humans, are at the top of the intellectual ladder.
Does History matter? This is a question that seems to appear often when talking about education, and most people think that history is unimportant. I on the other hand, think that history is of great importance because how can we move forward without knowing from whence we came. It is a fact that history has a way of repeating itself, and the majority of the time it is because we did not learn for our past mistakes and thus we are doomed to make the same mistake again. Without the knowledge of history how can you truly know who you are. Our history is what defines us as a species, and without it we would be nothing.
I would like to know where you stand on the issue--Does History matter to you?
I am going to expand a pond I have to about three acres, and I need to tare down the dam on one end of it. I was wondering if CL-18, or aminonitrobenzodifuroxan, would be a good explosive to remove the dam with. I seems like would be a particularly safe explosive seeing as it is resistant to shock, friction, and impact. I have a method of synthesizing it, but I need a way of detonating it. The dam is about 80% concrete and the other 20% is either granite or flint, and it is about 8 ft. wide, 17 ft. tall, and 160 ft. long.
Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton was identified by witnesses as the gunman who opened fire at a city council meeting Thursday night in Kirkwood, Mo., killing two police officers and at least three city officials before police shot him dead. Thornton had been in an ongoing dispute with the Kirkwood City Council.
By CHRIS BURY, RICH McHUGH and JONANN BRADY
Feb. 8, 2008
The gunman who killed five people at a city council meeting in Missouri left a suicide note on his bed warning, "The truth will come out in the end," before he went on the deadly shooting spree, according to the Associated Press.
The gunman, identified as Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton, stormed into the Kirkwood, Mo., meeting shouting "Shoot the mayor!" and began firing a gun. Thornton was carrying a grudge against the mayor and other members of the city council, according to many Kirkwood residents.
Thornton killed two police officers and three city officials before he was shot and killed by police. Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda is in critical condition at a local hospital, and a reporter was wounded but in stable condition, a hospital spokesman told the Associated Press.
The shooting stunned residents of the close-knit St. Louis suburb.
"I saw Cookie Thornton walk up to a police officer. He was carrying a sign, I couldn't read it," said Alan Hopfl, who was at the council meeting Thursday when the shooting started. "He was carrying a rather large silver revolver, and he shot the officer."
Thornton was a regular presence at the meetings and was usually verbally disruptive, according to many in the community. He was a contractor who'd been fighting city hall for years and had collected $18,000 in fines and code violations.
In 2006, he was hauled away after disrupting two council meetings. Thornton sued the city, contending his rights had been violated. Just 10 days ago, a federal judge dismissed his claim.
'Breaking Point'
Most of Thornton's anger seemed directed at the mayor.
"Cookie would berate the mayor and city officials," Hopfl said. "It was very unclear what point he was trying to make. It just seemed like he had a gripe against them."
Hopfl said that while Thornton was antagonistic at meetings, he never suspected the contractor would be capable of violence.
Michael Moore, a friend of Thornton's, said that the Cookie he knew was an educated, positive, church-going man.
"He was not disturbed, he was not crazy," Moore told ABCNews.com. "Some people just have a breaking point."
Thornton's breaking point came after what he saw as years of unwarranted harassment by city officials, who were on a mission to shut down his construction business, Moore said.
Thornton believed his problems with government officials were a symptom of the city's racial divide, Moore said.
"He wanted them to listen," Moore said. "For over seven years, he tried to get the council to listen, he tried to get the courts to listen, he tried to get the media to listen. Now the whole world wants to listen."
Thornton's own mother seemed to confirm her son's motive.
"Well, the ones he shot I guess were the ones he felt had done him harm," said Annie Bell Thornton.
Residents of Kirkwood were still trying to process the shooting deaths of people they knew so well.
"I have a heaviness in my heart right now because so many of them are my friends," said resident Jeanie Voight.
The town had not seen a murder in the last decade before Thursday night.
"There's going to be a lot of grieving to do," Hopfl said. "It will be something very difficult for the town to get through."
Here are some riddles to test your wit.
(1) Whoever makes it, tells it not. Whoever takes it, knows it not. And whoever knows it wants it not.
(2) Black I am and much admired, men seek me until they're tired. When they find me, they break my head, and take from me my resting bed. What am I?
(3) What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, has a bed but never sleeps?
(4) Four men were in a boat on the lake. The boat turns over, and all four men sink to the bottom of the lake, yet not a single man got wet! Why?
(5) A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening, he gets into the elevator, and, if there is someone else in the elevator - or if it was raining that day - he goes back to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment. Can you explain why?
(6) A table tennis ball (= ping pong ball) fell into a tight deep pipe (amendment: eg. 30 cm long, buried in concrete pavement - having firm metal bottom, only 1 cm of the pipe is above the ground - so it can not be moved). The pipe was only a bit wider than the ball, so you can not use your hand. How would you take it out, with no damage?
Proud To Be White
Someone finally said it.
How many are actually paying attention to this?
There are African Americans,
Mexican Americans,
Asian Americans,
Arab Americans,
Native Americans, etc.
...And then there are just -
Americans.
You pass me on the street
And sneer in my direction.
You Call me 'White boy,'
'Cracker,' 'Honkey,'
'Whitey,' 'Caveman,'
... And that's OK.
But when I call you Nigger,
Kike, Towel head,
Sand-nigger, Ca*** Jockey,
Beaner, Spick, Gook, or Chink
... You call me a racist.
You say that whites commit a lot
Of violence against you,
So why are the ghettos the most
Dangerous places to live?
You have the United Negro College Fund.
You have Martin Luther King Day.
You have Black History Month.
You have Cesar Chavez Day.
You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.
You Have Yom Hashoah.
You have the NAACP.
And you have BET.
If we had WET
(White Entertainment Television)
... We'd be racists.
If we had a White Pride Day
..... You would call us racists.
If we had White History Month
... We'd be racists.
If we had any organization for only whites
To 'advance' OUR lives .
... We'd be racists.
We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,
A Black Chamber of Commerce,
And then we just have the plain
Chamber of Commerce.
Wonder who pays for that?
If we had a college fund that only gave
White students scholarships
... You know we'd be racists.
There are over 60 openly-proclaimed
Black-only Colleges in the US ,
Yet if t here were 'White-only Colleges'
... THAT would be a racist college.
In the Million Man March,
You believed that you were
Marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights,
... You would call us racists.
You are proud to be black,
Brown, yellow and orange,
And you're not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride
... You call us racists.
You rob us,
Carjack us,
And shoot at us.
But, when a white police officer
Shoots a black gang member
Or beats up a black drug-dealer
Who is running from the LAW and
Posing a threat to ALL of society
... You call him a racist..
I am proud.
... But, you call me a racist.
Why is it that only
Whites
Student group works to be able to carry concealed weapons on campus
Nathan Hayes trudged through the rain from class to class Monday with an empty gun holster hanging at his right side.
His T-shirt showed a handgun surrounded by silk-screened bullet holes, above which was written, "Signs can't stop acts of violence." Below the emblem it reads, "armed citizens can."
Hayes is the campus leader of the Western chapter of a national group called Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. Their members are involved in a silent protest this week, wearing empty holsters and shirts like Hayes'.
"We want to try to spark debate or just bring attention to the issue," Hayes said.
The issue he spoke of is the ban by college campuses of concealed firearms worn by students and faculty who are licensed to do so.
So-called Right to Carry advocacy groups have pushed for years for what they perceive as the right of citizens to protect themselves with concealed firearms. Since the Virginia Tech shootings, college students across the nation have increasingly joined that platform.
"When Virginia Tech happened, it was showing me again what could happen," said Hayes. "I went real quick to a Web site and found a place where they were teaching a class that weekend. So, I drove up to Louisville that Sunday and took the class to get my license."
Hayes said that one of the main worries of the SCCC is that potential shooters will be more likely to commit violent acts, such as the Virginia Tech shootings, in gun-free areas.
Shooters are less likely to fear retaliation in such areas, he said.
Hayes said allowing guns on campus wouldn't increase the number of people who carry firearms. It would allow the people who currently carry guns to other places to also bring them on campus.
Gene Tice, vice president of student affairs and campus services, disagrees.
"We feel the police force can provide for the safety of students and faculty," Tice said. "I personally don't feel that bringing guns on campus is going to help the situation."
Tice said the problem with allowing students to carry concealed weapons to protect themselves from shootings is that, although they have been trained to use firearms, they have not been trained to respond to highly emotional crises as police have.
The SCCC Web site responds to that argument by stating, "The Virginia Tech shootings proved that the police can not stop a gunman. Campus police can not be dispatched in time to stop a madman."
The Web site also states that Utah has allowed licensed citizens to carry concealed handguns on campus since fall 2006, and it has yet to result in an act of violence.
Kentucky law doesn't forbid concealed carry on college campus, but it doesn't restrict the schools from making their own rules to that effect, Hayes said.
The Western student handbook mentions carrying firearms in two sections as an act of misconduct punishable by suspension and expulsion.
"There's no support in the university to move towards allowing students to carry concealed weapons on campus," Tice said.
Hayes said he was contacted by a statewide Right to Carry advocacy group called Kentucky Coalition to Carry Concealed, or KC3, before this week's protest.
"We're going to meet after the protest, maybe in November, and get the ball rolling as far as getting bills passed," Hayes said.
With the support of KC3, he said he hopes to have legislation passed that would prevent colleges from restricting concealed carry.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- With Turkish-U.S. relations strained, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that Turkey would not be deterred by the diplomatic consequences if it decides to stage a cross-border offensive into Iraq against Kurdish rebels.
"If such an option is chosen, whatever its price, it will be paid," Erdogan told reporters in response to a question about the international repercussions of such a decision, which would strain ties with the United States and Iraq. "There could be pros and cons of such a decision, but what is important is our country's interests."
Erdogan also had harsh words for the United States, which opposes a Turkish incursion into northern Iraq -- one of the country's few relatively stable areas.
"Did they seek permission from anyone when they came from a distance of 10,000 kilometers and hit Iraq?" he said. "We do not need anyone else's advice."
Analysts say Turkey could be less restrained about defying the United States because of a congressional committee's approval of a resolution labeling the mass killings of Armenians around the time of World War I as genocide.
"Democrats are harming the future of the United States and are encouraging anti-American sentiments," Erdogan said. Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives support the resolution.
Erdogan said Turkey was ready to sacrifice good ties with Washington if necessary.
"Let it snap from wherever it gets thin," Erdogan said, using a Turkish expression that means breaking ties with someone or something.
At issue in the resolution is the killing of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks. Turkey denies that the deaths constituted genocide, saying the toll has been inflated, and those killed were victims of civil war and unrest that killed Muslims as well as the overwhelmingly Christian Armenians.
Turkey, a key supply route to U.S. troops in Iraq, recalled its ambassador to Washington for consultations and warned of serious repercussions if Congress passes the resolution.
"In the United States, there are several narrow-minded legislators who can't think of their own interests and who cannot understand the importance of Turkey," said Murat Mercan, head of the Turkish parliament's foreign relations committee.
Turkish authorities have refused to comment on whether Turkey might shut down Incirlik air base in southern Turkey, a major cargo hub for U.S. and allied military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Turkey's Mediterranean port of Iskenderun is also used to ferry goods to American troops.
The Yeni Safak newspaper, which is close to the Turkish government, said Friday that Incirlik and $15 billion worth of defense contracts, including purchase of warplanes, missile and radar systems, could be reviewed. Turkey could also prevent U.S. firms from taking part in new contracts, Yeni Safak said.
Erdogan said Turkey has long been seeking the cooperation of Iraq and the United States in its fight against Kurdish guerrillas, but there has been no crackdown on the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has bases in Iraq. Erdogan said a recent anti-terrorism deal signed with Iraq was not valid since it had not been approved by Iraq's parliament yet.
The Turkish parliament was expected to approve a government request to authorize an Iraq campaign as early as next week, after a holiday ending the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
"We are making necessary preparations to be ready in case we decide on a cross-border operation since we don't have patience to lose more time," Erdogan said, adding that Turkey has lost 30 people in rebel attacks over the past two weeks.
A Turkish soldier was killed in a mine explosion on Thursday night on Mt. Gabar in southeastern Sirnak province, authorities said Friday.
Turkish army units, backed by helicopter gunships, were hunting rebels in the rugged border area.
Bahoz Erdal, a senior rebel commander, said the PKK fighters were moving further inside Turkey and taking new "positions" in the face of attacks from Turkey, pro-Kurdish Firat News Agency reported Friday. The agency is based in Belgium.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.
Burmese riot; police attack monks
Thousands of Burmese Buddhist monks and other protesters have been marching in Rangoon despite a crackdown that has reportedly killed at least one monk.
Monks' shaved heads stained with blood could be seen at the Shwedagon Pagoda where police charged against protesters demanding the end of military rule.
Some marchers started for the city centre while others headed for the home of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Security forces reportedly ringed six monasteries on the ninth day of unrest.
This is a battle of wills between Burma's two most powerful institutions, the military and the monk-hood, and the outcome is still unclear, the BBC's South East Asia correspondent, Jonathan Head, reports.
Hospital sources in Rangoon told the BBC that at least one monk had been killed and that two others were in intensive care.
The monks were beaten with the back of rifles. Taxi drivers are transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Other reports differ on the number killed with a monastery official telling Reuters news agency two monks had died while Burmese officials told AFP three monks had been killed.
Analysts fear a repeat of the violence in 1988, when troops opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing thousands.
The UN Security Council has called a meeting for 1900 GMT on Wednesday to discuss the clashes, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said.
Earlier, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown called for talks with a view to sending an envoy to the country. He vowed there would be "no impunity" for human rights violators.
'Human shield'
A clampdown on the media by Burma's military government, which has banned gatherings of five people or more and imposed a night-time curfew, makes following the exact course of the protests difficult.
It is known that several thousand monks and opposition activists moved away from Shwedagon Pagoda, heading for Sule Pagoda in the city centre.
"They are marching down the streets, with the monks in the middle and ordinary people either side - they are shielding them, forming a human chain"
^Unnamed eyewitness quoted by Reuters^
Reports suggest they were prevented from reaching it but other demonstrators did gather at Sule to jeer soldiers.
Troops responded by firing tear gas and live rounds over the protesters' heads, sending people running for cover.
Monks marching to the home of Aung San Suu Kyi reportedly urged civilians not to join them.
"We monks will do this, please don't join us, don't do anything violent," they were quoted by AFP as saying.
One witness quoted by Reuters said civilians were shielding the marching monks.
"They are marching down the streets, with the monks in the middle and ordinary people either side - they are shielding them, forming a human chain," the witness said.
At Shwedagon Pagoda, riot police charged against the protesters, leaving a number of monks and nuns covered in blood, some of them apparently seriously injured.
British embassy sources say at least 100 monks were beaten and arrested. Demonstrators were dragged away in trucks.
One BBC News website reader in Rangoon says armed and plainclothes police can be seen at key sites across the city. At City Hall, police are holding photos of the monks leading the protests, the reader says.
Two prominent dissidents, U Win Naing and popular comedian Zaganar, were arrested overnight.
'Different situation'
The protests were triggered by the government's decision to double the price of fuel last month, hitting people hard in the impoverished nation.
Aung Naing Oo, a former student leader who was involved in the 1988 uprising and who now lives in exile in the UK, believes the junta cannot stop the protesters.
"There was only very little information about the killings. Now with the internet and the whole world watching I think it's a totally different story... monks are highly revered in the country."
US President George W Bush has announced a tightening of US economic sanctions against Burma.
The US already has an arms ban on Burma, a ban on all exports, a ban on new investment and a ban on financial services.
