Seriously, that is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. (No offence)
Basically a tubular lock is full of 'pins' (little metal cylinders) which must be pushed up a certain amount to spin the plug (unlocking the door).
A key achieves this. A hunk of clay would not. (in fact, it would probably make the lock extremely difficult to pick/use.)
As for a way to make some picks out of household items, I've seen some paperclip picks, but they are difficult to make and use.
I've also seen pics of someone who heated up the end of some wire, hammered the end flat, and then grinded it into a pick shape.
I'd recommend getting a template and grinding a set out of carbon steel hacksaw blades. You probably won't have much luck with anything else.
