Guaifenesin is an expectorant. it brings moisture into your throat and loosens up mucus. In large doses, it causes mild dehydration and nausea.

As far as I know it is possible but rare...and anyway when you extract the DXM the Guaifenesin is left in the syrup.

if you want to take dxm, it's been my experience that the best move is to get delsym rather than other cough syrups. they seperate the dxm for you by making their cough syrup an emulsion - the dxm is in the form of little beads, like grains of sand, with a plastic coating that dissolves in your stomach. if you mix the syrup with a lot of water to thin it, the dxm will all settle in the bottom. if you put the mixture into a plastic 2 liter bottle, you can drain the water/syrup slowly by poking holes in the plastic. then, on the bottom, under a small amount of mainly water, you will have a layer of PURE dxm.
