Does anyone know how they train dogs to sniff out certain illegal drugs? it would be sweet if you had your own drug dog to sniff out friends stashes and shit, plus i just think it would be cool to have for smell proofing and stuff... i just bought a german sheppard puppy and i was just thinkin it would be cool to train him...

actually its pretty basic. Bascially, its the principle of giving the dog a good wiff of it, then hiding within about 10 ft... then when/if he finds it you reward him.. do that about ten days hiding it somewhere different but within 10 feet. then after that, every 4 or 5 days push it back about 3-5ft, until he can do it from about 200 ft or somethin like that. than your set, but if you want him to do it based on command, then everytime you let him sniff it, give him a command like find it, and then after a while he will be conditioned. IT's very similar to Pavlov's(sp?) conditioning of his dogs

not really, pavlov's dog conditioning thing was that he made dogs drool on the ringing of a bell cuz he rung a bell every time he fed the dog, that's not a trick, it's natural conditioning, there is a difference....his demonstration was that dogs can connect a noise or the sight of something with food, and therefore could be trained in such a way....not really the same thing...

ok so i'm rusty on my pavlov - atleast i knew who he was haha.

well it kind of is, because you can relate a certain smell to happiness with the dog by giving him his treat after he finds it. so when he smells something, he becomes happy because he is going to be rewarded, not quite alike, but somewhat... but idk, i heard that you need to find a toy that they will never grow old with and let them play with it for a couple days, and then coat it in the drug you want them to find, then let em play with it a little longer, then you need to hide it somewhere and have them go find it, and eventually, replace the ball with the real thing, and when they find it, you need to give em the toy so they are happy! but as far as telling them on command how to do it, idk about that, maybe what LNT said and every time you have them smell it, tell em find it or something.

that's how k-9 units actually work - off of command. i'm actually intrigued i'm gonna go talk to the k-9 unit here about how they are trained - "summer school report" lol. even if i am out of high shcool - i can pull it off lmao

well actually they dont just let the dog sniff it and hide. The dog has a toy just a regular dog toy that can hold a smell and they make it smell like whutever they want the dog to find and they let him play with it for a few days, so when the dog is lookng for the drugs he thinks its his toy, so the reward for finding it is his toy that he was playing with. Thats it.

I was trying to do this, but then the dog ate a gram of my weed once so I stopped training him.

But LNT is basicly right about what you do, at least thats what I did.

yah, you need really obedient dogs to do this, and you need to make sure they dont eat your stash, and when they do, beat em with a bong....
