Basically, BlueRay uses shorter wavelengths produced by a blue ray, 405 nanometres, to store more information on a disc, while regular DVDs use a red laser, 650 nanometres, that stores less and is spaced farther apart.

As for BlueRay, it's a high definition dvd produced using a blue ray, dur, which allows more information to be stored. A single sided regular DVD, produced with a red laser, holds just over four and a half GB, right around 4.7 GB of information (about 2 hrs + bonus features); however, to get high definition images it takes up more bandwidth hence the need for BlueRay which can hold about 27GB (13 hrs of standard DVD OR just over 2 hrs + bonus features of high definition) of information creating a picture with higher digital quality, and also boost the digital quality of your sound. A double sided BlueRay can hold about 54 GB (20+ hrs of regular DVD OR about 4 1/2 hrs of high def. video).

The picture included shows CD v. DVD v. BlueRay. Easily stated, the more bumps mean the more information imbedded due to the type of light used. BlueRay has the highest storage capacity.

BlueRay is much better in digital picture and audio. A new BlueRay player can average between $300 - $400 on a good day. Good news is that old dvds can be played in a blue ray player; however, if you play BlueRay dvds in an old player neither the audio or video will be enhanced.
