Walking into busy electronics store. Grab one off of shelf, Disable any alarm devices (Sometimes can be done with a strong magnet, just be careful not not to ruin the iPod in the process) Walk out door.

If they keep them behind glass, wait until it's really busy, get kinda pissy that they aren't helping you, but enough that they won't want to deal with you after opening the case. Ask to look at a couple different models. Wait for them to turn their backs/help another customer (a buddy here is a great asset) Check for any flaws in their system. Is there areas that the cameras don't cover? Does their pedestal alarm only go off every so often, like only when someone goes through with a tag slowly (Like mine at castle you could walk reeeallly briskly through and be okay). Along the same lines, see if there is one that is acting up, randomly going off and such. Go through that one. Or follow someone who is getting a larger item that is most likely tagged and tailgate them through, and most likely the store clerk will think it's them

yeah... well lets say bestbuy. they are behind glass and never too busy. if there was one not behind glass it would still be hard... off subject but you know the little alarm tags at clothing stores or at like blockbuster. i wonder if you could buy the little mechanism that takes them off?

Well then find someplace that is busy. You may have to invest a little time or drive a bit. Stores like Fred Meyer or Kroger that are superstores and have electronic departments are best.

And yes, you can buy them. You have to find a place that sells retail equipment. Most places won't sell to you though, unless you have a retail cert. At Castle we just had a big disk shaped magnet with a divot in the middles that pulled on another magnet in the tag to release the pin. We also had soft tags that were deactivated simply by passing them over an electromagnet.

And it actually works? Usually those things are a gutted display model with nothing but very basic functionality to demo the touch screen and such.
