lmfao holy shit, this quote from that article:

"Scientists plan to hunt for signs of the invisible "dark matter" and "dark energy" that make up more than 96 percent of the universe, and hope to glimpse the elusive Higgs boson, a so-far undiscovered particle thought to give matter its mass."

That sounds just like the His Dark Materials book series, the Golden Compass being book 1 if you aren't familiar with it...

I doubt there's any real threat, and even if there is, eh, isn't there much more to discover in death than in life? That is unless there isn't... lol
Being an agnostic is fun.

Being an atheist sucks though. I dread dying.

Please allow me to clarify on some confusion. The hydron collider was created to reinvent the the series of events similar to what is believed to be the big bang.

Also, dark matter is a silly myth used to mystify DND nerds and sound cool. Oh, and giving matter mass. What? Matter has mass. matter is anything composed of atoms or other than a vacuum.

Come on. This is ridiculous. I fucking hate media.

Well, that is one of the many purposes the particle accelerator was created for, but not the only purpose. One of it's other purposes is to discover what the building blocks of subatomic particles are, such as the lepton and quark. This is all part of the field of quantum physics; which is one of the somewhat theoretical fields of physics....

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you are badly mistaken. Through gravitational lensing scientists have found substantial proof that dark matter does exist; however, it would be nice to have some tangible proof as well. If you do a little research into the field of quantum physics you will find that "Dark Matter" is a completely logical answer to the "missing" mass in the universe. Its presence is inferred indirectly from the motions of astronomical objects; specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations. It is also required in order to enable gravity to amplify the small fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background enough to form the large-scale structures that we see in the universe today. For each of the stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations the basic principle is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass there for gravity to stop all the objects flying apart. When such velocity measurements are done on large scales, it turns out that the amount of inferred mass is much more than can be explained by the luminous stuff. Hence we infer that there is dark matter in the Universe. Dark matter has important consequences for the evolution of the Universe and the structures within it. According to general relativity, the Universe must conform to one of three possible types: open, flat, or closed. The total amount of mass and energy in the universe determines which of the three possibilities applies to the Universe. In the case of an open Universe, the total mass and energy density is less than unity. If the Universe is closed, the total mass and energy is greater than unity. For the case where the total mass and energy is exactly equal to one the Universe is "flat". Note that the dynamics of the Universe are not determined entirely by the geometry (open, closed or flat) unless the Universe contains only matter. In our Universe, where most of the total mass and energy comes from dark energy, this relation between the mass density, spatial curvature and the future of the universe no longer holds. It is then no longer true in this case that "geometry (spatial curvature) is destiny." Instead, to find out what will happen one needs to calculate the evolution of the expansion factor of the universe for the specific case of matter density, spatial curvature and "funny energy" to find out what will happen. "Dark matter" candidates are usually split into two broad categories, with the second category being further sub-divided: Baryonic and Non-Baryonic which is divided into "hot dark matter" (HDM) and "cold dark matter" (CDM) depending on their respective masses and speeds. CDM candidates travel at slow speeds (hence "cold") or have little pressure, while HDM candidates move rapidly (hence "hot"). Current indications from the cosmic microwave background are that the universe is spatially flat. That implies that the sum of all of the energy (density) in the universe equals the critical density, i.e. the total mass and energy is 1. This is quite interesting because as the Universe expands the value of the total mass and energy changes. In fact the value 1 is unstable, and the Universe would prefer to evolve towards one of the two natural values: 0, if the expands forever further apart until the Universe is almost totally empty ; and infinity, if the matter re-collapses to a state of higher and higher density. Then the observation that the total mass and energy is fairly close to 1 today, means that it must have been even closer to 1 in the past. It is unsatisfying to believe that we just happen to live at the time when the total mass and energy is just starting to depart from 1 by a small factor. It is much more appealing to consider that we do not live at a special epoch, so that the total mass and energy is still close to 1 today. But then we need to explain why the total mass and energy started out very close to 1 in the early universe. The theory of inflation provides just such a justification - most versions of inflation predict that the early Universe was driven extremely close to flat, and that it is still very close to flat today. If this is so, then at least 90% the energy of the Universe is dark! Note that although the universe may be flat, that does not mean that matter makes up the critical density. In addition to dark matter there is dark energy, e.g. a cosmological constant, that needs to be included in the accounting. Sorry for rambling on like that, but I got caught up in the moment...... I hope that helps explain the probability of "Dark Matter."

Did you read my post because I thought I explained the subject quite thoroughly, and made it as easy to understand as I possibly could. I find it highly improbable that not one person on this site understands what I was saying; I mean seriously, are you telling me that you failed to comprehend what I was saying--I find that hard to believe....

wait a minute... i think thats an insult! lol

deo you seem to really be into this kinda stuff. that was a great explaination of the existance of dark matter. im interested in this stuff too but i haven't delved into the subject even close to the extent it seems you have.

I thought the idea of the quark was discredited, right?

I'm sorry, from what I learned, the idea of dark matter was an idiots way of explaining a vacuum, then people put "little" altercations onto what they heard until it was just a big made up piece of shit.

I actually started studying quantum physics about 2 months ago. I'm not that far into it because of late I have been looking into planetary laws of motion and I worked on the comprehension of the formulas for a while.

Am I the only one who thinks it weird that all the planets in our solar system are coplanar? Or is that a silly misconception or poor representation in text books? I'm sure deo will have somewhat of an answer.

Oh, i have one more question. Deo said something about the amount of energy required to produce a black hole would multiples of the sun's explosion, but what if that amount of energy is produced by the hydron collider?
