Atom Smasher - End of the World?

No, I don't think it's the end of the world, just thought the title would catch more attention, so, maybe ye guys have heard of this, if not i'll post the link below.

Basically, these scientist fuckers made this big ass Atom Smasher. Spent $5.8 Billion on it, been working on it forever, and they plan on turning this thing on in August. Critics say it is going to create blackholes and swallow the fuckin' earth up, others say it's going to spit out particles and vaporize us all, some shit like that.......That is the short story of it all.

I'm not really worried about it, was wondering what ye all thought? Might make a good convo. Here's the link..... Scientists: Nothing to fear from atom-smasher - Yahoo! News

that is one massive bad ass machine, if it ends the world so be it. this planet aint gonna last much longer after all we have put it through and with world populations predicted to reach 10 billion within the next hundred years we're gonna have a food and resource shortage, which will inevitably wipe out most of the population forcing to a primitive new world order.

Aye, the idea of a blackhole is crazy, thats why i'm so interested. I was watching a show hosted by Stephen Hawkings speaking about Black Holes and it's fuckin' crazy. Who's to say a blackhole actually kills us? It's a mind boggler.

Honestly, even if the atom smasher doesn't end the world, why for fuck sake don't we as humans spend $5.8 Billion dollars on trying to cure diseases, find alternative energy sources and environmental issues instead of this huge ass waste of money?
Some areas of science waste money on such bullshit!

Well, the purpose of the particle accelerator is to discover new subatomic particles, and in doing so help us better understand how fusion works, and thus help us find better ways to create and harness energy. Also, if a quantum singularity was created by the particle accelerator it would be so infinitely small and it's life so infinitely short that it would pose no harm to us, or anything else for that matter.

As I said in the original post, I don't believe the world is coming to an end, that doesn't mean i'm totally ruling it out. Yeah.....It's possible. Point is, if there was even the SLIGHTEST chance....Like 1 in 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999 that this machine could wipe out the entire human race, and even earth as a whole, I don't think thats worth trying to figure out ways to harness energy, y'know? It's retarded. Why take that chance?

Now what Albert said, I agree, spending that much money on something that could possibly end life, instead of spending that money on for say, feeding starving children, yeah, pretty stupid, but again, I guess these fuckers just didn't find feeding the poor as exciting as a doomsday device.

Now deo, when you said "if a quantum singularity was created by the particle accelerator it would be so infinitely small and it's life so infinitely short that it would pose no harm to us"......This is just theory, it's what Stephen Hawkings said I believe, wasn't the purpose of this machine to study things we cant explain? We have NO IDEA whats going to happen when this thing gets turned on, they have said it themselves.....

My last thought.....Lets take a small town police station, how many of those cops are crooked out of x amount of cops? A child daycare center, how many of these babysitters are pedophiles out of an x amount of babysitters? You can come up with your own scenario.......BUT how many of these scientists out of x amount of scientists have ill intentions? Some fuckin' sicko who has access to this kind of technology could be dangerous.

I think the theory is that this new machine for some reason would shoot out these black holes at a slow enough speed that it actually can get caught in the earths gravitational pull, causing the hole to just suck everything into it over a little bit of time. (though I could just be really high right now)

I think you're just high.......

However, let me further explain why there is no need for worry on the part of a particle accelerator actually creating a quantum singularity (a.k.a. black hole). It is highly improbable that any man made device of this era will ever come close to creating a quantum singularity of any substantial size. The energy required to create a quantum singularity is unfathomable huge; for example, if our sun exploded it would only create 1/1000000 of the energy and mass needed to create a quantum singularity. The stars that usually create quantum singularities are thousands of times more massive than our sun, and most of those just die out and create dwarf stars; only the truly massive stars create "black holes."

I agree somewhat with your statement, but I have researched the subject and found that even if a scientist had ill intention a particle accelerator would be of little use in any plans he may have. The only reason these machines are built it to, as previously stated, "discover the unknown." There are very few dangers in dealing with a particle accelerator because of how infinitely small the material you are working with is. These particles already pass through our bodies millions of every day, and have little effect on our bodies--some of them are actually essential to our metabolic processes. The only outcome of this endeavor is that the scientist might shed some new light into the field of quantum mechanics, discover a few new particles, and further explain how the universe works. I will admit there are some risk to the project, but they are so highly improbable that they are not even worth consideration. With every new advancement in our understanding of the universe the cost and dangers are going to compound exponentially. However, the cost is well worth it in the long run because how can we evolve as species if we don't understand how our universe works. It is essential to space exploration that we uncover all the unknowns, and dangers of our universe. How can we ever expect to travel to other planets and galaxies if we don't have some idea of what awaits us on the other end.

It's only a matter of time before the government releases a drug for everyone that they say we need and overtime turns us into zombies, and the rest who don't are eaten alive by zombies.
