I just typed out a long response to this, but here's my second response...
superfly, i think your image of revolution, like most peoples, is a little askew. when i use the word i mean that which happens when a vanguard of revolutionaries fights for the People against the establishment to bring about certain conditions, deemed "revolutionary."
nonviolence is and can only be one level of the revolution, which, to occur, must happen on all levels. death and destruction will occur, but isn't it occurring now? why not kill and destroy those who are causing and prolonging all these problems? you say these people in power won't feel the flames of revolution; than it isn't revolution.
like malcolm x said, those who will be fighting in a revolution on the side of the People are likely, by birth, to be trapped in the prisons of poverty, to die anyways. so do you die fighting for the People, or killing time?
do you die, in the terminology of huey p. newton, committing reactionary suicide (drugs, ignorance, apathy, etc)? or revolutionary suicide, to die fighting for the community (intercommunalism/survival programs)?
I agree with TheBlackParty's last post; in order for evolution to occur, revolution must occur (they are blocking our paths), and for revolution to occur we must liberate the minds of the People. Education and participation, but to what degree?
"We are on the inside. We are the only ones who can get at the monster's heart without subjecting the world to nuclear fire. We have a momentous historical role to act out if we will. The whole world for all time in the future will love us and remember us as the righteous people who made it possible for the world to live on. If we fail through fear and lack of aggressive imagination, then the slaves of the future will curse us, as we sometimes curse those of yesterday. I don't want to die and leave a few sad songs and a hump in the ground as my only monument. I want to leave a world that is liberated from trash, pollution, racism, nation-states, nation-state wars and armies, from pomp, bigotry, parochialism, a thousand different brands of untruth, and licentious usurious economics."
Lastly, what ghandi did in india was just that, done in india in a completely different situation. that does not mean it is applicable today in amerika. besides, ghandi got the british out of his country, but not his country out of the pockets of the capitalists. we are all connected in this, the vietnam war, for instance, to the black revolution (1960's) which they want us to forget/not know ever happened/misunderstand. just 40 years ago we were on the verge of revolution in this country, dont you forget it.
study it.
live it.

Settle your quarrels, come together, understand the reality of our situation, understand that fascism is already here, that people are dying who could be saved, that generations more will die or live poor butchered half-lives if you fail to act. Do what must be done, discover your humanity and your love in revolution. Pass on the torch. Join us, give up your life for the people. —George Jackson
