An interesting read for those curious about the cultural decline of the Western World. It goes back to sometimes as afar as the middle age and studies how the birth of centralized states in Europe has led to first the destruction of countless natives cultures and languages, then to the creation of artificial nations that ended up smothering individual liberty under the cover of democracy for preserving their integrity. (I'm summing up roughly).
The book is 70 years old and didn't anticipate such things as post-modernism but the underlying thought-formatting mechanisms it points out are still insightful as there's a striking analogy with the works/influence of mass media in today's world.
