technique = google IP addressing.

there are different classes of IP, and the network you are a part of is dictated by one of the octets (there are four) which changes depending on the class.

chances are you have a 192.168.(something).(any number from 1-254 that isnt already in use on your network.)

if you toss in random numbers you will most likely fail and you will DEFINITLY change your network and not be able to access the internet. just do a little reading on IP (try microsoft tech net) and you should be fine.

darthn3ss- "using private addresses internally and using NAT or PAT to translate between the public and private addresses.. yeah."

which is what i was talking about ...maybe you shouldnt spend so much time contradicting people who know what they're saying and concentrate more on the idiots giving out incorrect advice. not like it matters either way, sounds like it should be an internal change. hence the advice on changing his internal IP and not more in depth comments on NATing or Proxies.

I'll do some reading on changing IP addresses then.

How do you go about masking IP addresses? Is this harder than changing it altogether?

I dont really understand what you are trying to accomplish by doing this. Changing your external IP is much.. much harder what I think a casual moron can do. What I've seen so far in this thread is either changing your internal IP or using a proxy... but depending on what you are wanting to do, those more than likely wont work. You cant really ever be truly anonymous online; if someone wants to track you down.. they can. Best and easiest (and most legal) way to change your IP is to call your internet provider and buy a new one.
