You don't have to use salt, you can use lye, melts at a much more accessible temperature (318 C I believe, but could be wrong, correct me if I am indeed wrong). Of course, using lye presents a greater deal of difficulty, as it is highly corrosive, especially at high temperatures. It's not only likely to burn you, it will dissolve anything in its way, including you. Add that to the number of reasons why you should forgo this. If anyone does attempt this, make sure you do it in an N2 box.

Propane torches (without an oxidizer) can reach about 900F (450C). NaCl melts at 1472F (800C). A propane torch on its own cannot melt NaCl without the use of an oxidizing agent. If you split the NaCl in an oxygen rich environment, the sodium will explode (which may compromise any containment that you may have tried to set up) and there will be chlorine gas swirling around you – which will kill anyone not wearing a gas mask.
