There are tons of ways to generate smoke.

With the melting-the-KNO3-and-sugar-together bit, bear in mind that you don't actually have to melt it (just mix it well and put it in a container) but you can if you like. Also, I've discovered the hard way that the coating on nonstick pots reacts with the KNO3 and ignites the mixture before it melts... So use a regular pot, not a nonstick one.

You can easily create smoke by vaporizing motor oil or similar over a hot anything... Like a submersible heater dropped into a can of oil.

Another decent one is to saturate some newspaper or other cheap and disposable cellulose based material (tissue paper would work, or any other kind, really, but newspaper is cheap/free) with a solution of ammonium nitrate. Once it dries, roll it tightly and place in a container with an open end... When burned in confinement it will generate smoke.

I know but my way is easier. Anyways easy way to make one:

Buy a new pack of uncooked bacon.
Cut the fat off(white goey part)
Melt it down and place it in a tinfoil mold or any other type of mold for a candle. Put a wick in it, not firework, they burn too fast, buy extra candle wick for this.
Light and run, it smells bad and smokes like a bitch.
