Explosives are divided into two main cetegories: High and Low. High Explosives are divided into two furhter categories; Primary and secondary.

A primary explosive is an explosive that is extremely sensitive to stimuli such as impact, friction, heat, or electrostatic sources of initiation. Primary Explosives or 'primers' are often used in detonators or to trigger larger charges of less sensitive secondary explosives.

As a very general rule, primary explosives are considered to be those compounds that are more sensitive than PETN. As a practical measure, primary explosives are sufficiently sensitive that they can be reliably initiated with a blow from a hammer; however, PETN can usually be initiated in this manner, so this is only a very broad guideline. Additionally, several compounds, such as nitrogen triiodide, are so sensitive that they cannot even be handled without detonating.

A number of primary explosives are commonly used in blasting caps to translate a signal (electrical, shock, or in the case of laser detonation systems, light) into an action, i.e., an explosion. A small quantity—usually milligrams—is sufficient to initiate a larger charge of explosive that is usually safer to handle.

AP is an easy beginner's explosive. It only takes twenty bucks worth of hardware store chemicals and is hard to fuck up.

HOWEVER.

It is also a very dangerous activity! AP is very sensitive, and WILL kill you if you give it the oppurtunity.

Never turn your back on an explosive. Never leave a nitration running overnight. And ALWAYS you must KNOW your local laws! Do NOT go into this without thinking! LEARN the procedure. Simulate it with water and flour until you know EXACTLY what to do! And RESEARCH what's going to happen!

Never try something like AP without knowing exactly what's going on. If you've never even made your own black powder, or smoke mix, do not even THINK about reading the instructions.

dude i know how dangerous AP is, ive been reading about it and i researched it on other sites. The reason why im asking u is because u always seem to be right and instructions from u are usually accurate. Okiedokie. Mega's using 30% H2O2 (which is doubtful you'd be able to obtain) and sulfuric acid as the catalyst. Furthermore, that's much too much for a first-timer to synth. First, scale it down by 50% so:

25ml P2P
15ml 30% HOOH

Then, convert the HOOH to a 3% solution (the kind they sell at drugstores)

25mL P2P
150mL HOOH

And use HCl instead of H2SO4, and double the volume of that you'd need for the same concentration. Also, after washing; check the pH with litmus strips. It's somewhat more stable if slightly acidic, so aim for a pH of about 6-6.5

Also, keep the reaction as cold as possible. Colder means slower; but will yeild trimer forms instead of less stable dimer and monomers. Plus you'll get smaller crystals, which are less sensitive then large ones.
