NI3 is one of the first (and most unstable) explosives I have ever made, and I suggest only experienced pyromaniacs try to make it. You'll need:

-Household ammonia
-Iodine Crystals
-a glass beaker
-a funnel
-filter paper

Just put the crystals in the beaker, fill the beaker with ammonia, and wait a while till the crystals dissolve. Put the filter paper in the funnel, and pour the mixture through it. There will be some crystals in the filter, this is the NI3. It's wet now, and as long as it's wet, it's pretty stable. When it dries, however, it will be set off by almost anything. When you want to use NI3, I suggest you make it on the spot where you want to use it, it's way too unstable to transport. You could try transporting it dissolved in ammonia, but I'm not sure if that's safe. Anyways, good luck, and be careful.

How big of an explosion are we talking about and how unstable is it? Mainly just wondering because I dont feel like being called the kid on the news who got killed trying to make a little bang in middle of a field and ended up blowing himself and 3 of his friends up =P

I got the iodine crystals from a pharmacy, but I don't know if they're so easy to get in the USA. To blow yourself up, you'll need more than 100 grams, so don't worry 'bout that. About the sensitivity..... I wouldn't breathe too loud when you're around this stuff, if you get my point :P

inexperienced people dont EVER try this. nitrogen triiodide is extremely sensitive detonating under its own weight or even by the touch of a feather

It's expensive and weak.
And very sensitive and can easily take your fingers off.
