Catalysed oxidation.

Table salt, iron turnings and usually magnesium filings... Which produces hydrogen gas as a byproduct, kind of a bitch when you're trying to stay covert... Though it varies from country to country. Some use anhydrous calcium oxide.

You can actulaly make a pressure bomb out of MRE heaters, just put it in a plastic bottle and add about 1/3 water. It takes a while so you don't have to run away from it.
