You could, in theory, use a firecracker as the initial impulse however you might as well just fuse the detonator because you'll still need one. For example.

Fuse (NC/BP) > Firecracker (Flash Powder) > Blasting Cap (Mercury Fulminate) > Booster (PETN) > Charge (ANFO).


However, you could just as easily Go straight from fuse to blasting cap, there's no need for the 'cracker.

NO matter what you use for the initial impulse, however, there is NO WAY anything less then a secondary explosive will be able to reliably and completely det an AN composition, with the possible exception of ANAP.

you forgot to metion that the products of the explosion i.e: CO2, H2O and other gasses, when created from the decompositon of the reaction also release energy when created as well
