Hydrochloric
acid is easily found under its antiquated name, "muriatic acid." For some godawful reason it's usually stocked with the paint thinners and supplies at hardware and home supply stores such as Home Depot and Lowes... Though it's generally used for cleaning masonry.
You probably have some zinc in your pocket right now. All US pennies made after 1982 are primarily zinc, quite pure, with a coating of copper plated on top that's a handful of atoms thick. A quick kiss with a grinding wheel will expose enough zinc to let the
acid in; The hydrochloric
acid will attack the zinc but not the copper, leaving you with zinc chloride, hydrogen gas, and the hollowed out copper husks of pennies.
Another good source for zinc is "die cast" metal toys (like Hotwheels knockoffs) which are commonly made of zinc or at least mostly zinc because the stuff is easy to melt and cast, and doesn't kill you quite as bad as lead.
