NOx is written to signify a multitude of Nitrogen Oxides.
The X can stand for 2, 4, or 5.
There are several different oxidation states for Nitrogen, so they are not the same thing. NOS isn't a chemical name, it's the name of a trademark. The only proper way to express nitrous oxide is to say "Nitrous Oxide", or to say "N2O".

Actually, I've heard that NO
X is short for nitrous oxide (doesn't matter if it's laughing gas, or any other mitrous oxide), and NO
x is the chemical formula, where x would define the number of oxygen-ions.
But you may correct me if I'm wrong, I'm better at carbohydrate names.
