But I'm curious, is there any way to purchase it NOT online? Like could I go to some type of store and get them? Or is there a type of trade that uses it that I might be able to work through? Just curious if any one knows.

Dangerous I know, but I know the precautions and luckily I'm not as ignorant as my friends.

dont do it. that stuff will go off at the touch of a feather or a light breeze, and doing it inside an enclosed space is still extremely dangerous. Even after my expiriences in the past on this site I talked to my chem teacher bout it and the stuff can go off from the air displacement caused by your body according to him. Stay away from feather sensitive touch explosives.

if u want to try it, make a very small batch and u will be fine..
tip: once u get the crystals out set them to dry in a Safe place and watch them

as for getting iodine ..if u are able to obtain potassium iodide
(KI)(it is used for radiation medicine as well as a few other things ..my chem teacher was doing that demo with KI, H2O2 and dish soap and i stol the KI)
u can mix KI(aq) with sulfuric acid (dont know exact ratio) and Iodine crystals will form
i hav heard this is not the most effectiv way but iv tried it and it works
