How the fuck is someone supposed to get ammonium hydroxide? It's real name, aqueous ammonia, is formed by dissolving ammonia, Kb= 1.8x10^-5, in water. Because the Kb (base constant) is so low, only a very small portion of the ammonia will dissolve in the water solution (0.42%). Since this is a ridiculously small number, the yield you claimed before, “my final yield was between 50% and 60%,” doesn’t seem reasonable. Ammonia hydroxide isn’t that common either, I don’t know of any household cleaners or pipe cleaners which use it. Most use potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide because they are much stronger bases.

aqueous ammonia cleaning solution = ammonium hydroxide = very easy to obtain at supermarkets or in a purer form from lab suppliers.

My bad, I messed up the research.

I don't know why, but I missed this link which shows a table of common chemicals and where to get them:

Common chemicals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This link is pretty useful. I recommend it to anyone who is new to this site. Interesting chems are Naphthalene, Hydrochloric acid, Ammonium Hydroxide, and some others...

You can also get Ammonium Hydroxide here and it's 99.95% pure, but sadly only 29% concentration.

But still, that reaction is not really that important for DIY chemists because ammonium nitrate is one of the easiest chemicals to get. I don’t really understand why anyone would waste nitric acid on AN anyway. Personally, I would use it to create more briscant secondaries. Like RDX and PETN.
