Thermite is a mixture of any metal oxide and any other metal that is more reactive than the oxidized metal. On application of heat the oxidized metal acts as an oxidizer for the pure metal, which creates a fuckton more heat (a technical term).
The 'classic' thermite mixture is iron oxide and aluminum, which has been repeated ad nauseum in various publications of dubious value - most of which overstate its power and utility and thusly the 'formula' has been repeated an nauseum again by every 13 year old kidiot who has never actually successfully made or used it but thinks that it's the magic solution to everything.
To wit, the Anarchist's Cook Book (Jolly Roger's version) states with authority that a pile of thermite 'the size of a quarter' will 'melt through a car hood, through the engine block, and through to the pavement underneath,' which is utter bullshit.
Note that other thermite mixtures exist and most of them are easier to ignite than iron oxide/aluminum. For example, copper oxide and zinc or aluminum oxide and magnesium...
