Well I saw it mentioned in the election thread, and I thought it was good for debate. So, what do you think?
I think that, if combined with electronic ballots, abolition of the electoral college would be disastrous. This is because the outcome of our presidential election could go to the highest bidder if both of these things were decided upon.
The electoral college was created to battle dumb people. Today, there are even *more* dumb people.

honestly i think it's a broken system it was created to make everything easier to handle(or to battle dumb people) idk i guess i'm thinking it would make more sense to just take the total votes of the nation and the most popular wins idk that kinda sounds like the honest thing to do but then again possibly not the smartest. I"m sorry i'm not much to debate with i kinda agree with you it's used to combat stupid people but then i think it's also used for easier manipulation of the pulls for a small minorities interests. It would be an honest though to just elect the most popular but then a smarter though to elect the better president. SO who knows i guess i agree with you i'm sorry for the shitty ass debate :(

The problem with the Electoral system is that a president can be elected even if the the majority of Americans votes agianst him. As this has happend in 2000 with Gore vs Bush. (It is a descrace how Gore was cheated by Congress, that needs to be a whole debate its self) The reason we have the Electoral College is becuase Republicans and Democrats created this complex system to make sure that they will always have a position in government. They have made it almost impossible for 3rd parties to start(these are the parties that have obolished slavery, started the civil rights movement, womens rights, environmentalism, and eventually gay and immigration rights as well).
And i dont know about protecting us from dumb people, but i know that dumb people dont vote. Acually alot of Americans dont vote, this is because we are to worried about making ends meat to care or worry about it(this is a problem).
I think we should have easy and accesable ways to vote. We should be able to vote online somehow i mean dam this is the fucking future.
And It should be majority wins meaning: Who gets the most votes wins presidency. It should be that simple.

The electoral college has only gone against the majority vote of the people a select few times.

I hate the electoral college because it just splits America into this red blue divide. Its just a power stuggle so see whos political party will run the country. We need to break this divide.

We choose the electors, so doesn't that mean that our votes do, in a way, count.

The country will always be divided by some sort of political affiliation, if you get rid of these new ones will quickly take their place.

A Deo - you're right, now I think about it.
I go with the saying: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
