At least 31 killed in Virginia Tech shootings

"If the fatality numbers are confirmed, it would be the worst shooting on a university campus in the United States.

Details of the incident are still sketchy but it appears that a gunman killed at least one person and wounded several others at a co-ed residence hall at about 7:15 a.m. local time.

Police responded to that incident and began investigating.

About two hours later, a second shooting erupted at Norris Hall, an engineering building on the opposite end of the 1,050-hectare campus.

When it was all over, there were a total of 31 fatalities, including the gunman.

"Today, the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," university president Charles Steger told a morning news conference. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

Reporters had initially been told that there had been only one death in one incident. A gasp of shock erupted at the news conference when Police Chief Wendell Flinchum told stunned reporters he had "a ballpark figure of fatalities" of at least 20.

Another 29 were injured and taken to hospital; at least one is in critical condition.

It's not clear how many of the victims were students.

A gunman was found dead at the scene of the second incident, though it's unclear whether he was shot by authorities or shot himself.

Police say they believe that one gunman was involved in both incidents, but they have released no information about his identity. The motive for the attack is also unknown.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, "but all avenues will be explored.''

The university was able to update its 26,000 students through emails. The college has cancelled all classes for Monday and Tuesday.

This is the second time in less than a year that the Virginia Tech campus has been closed because of a shooting.

In August 2006, an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus. The accused gunman is still awaiting trial on capital murder charges.

Police said there had been bomb threats on the Virginia Tech campus over the past two weeks but authorities said they have not determined a link to Monday's shootings.

U.S. President George Bush was said to be shocked by Monday's massacre.

"He was horrified and his immediate reaction was one of deep concern for the families of the victims, the victims themselves, the students, the professors and all of the people of Virginia who have dealt with this shocking incident," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Perino added it was premature to discuss whether Bush would travel to the Blacksburg area.

Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, in Tokyo for a two-week Asian trade mission, is on his way home after being given word of the shooting.

A statement from Kaine says it is "difficult to comprehend senseless violence on this scale.''

The previous deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby's Cafeteria in Killen, Texas, and shot 23 people to death, then himself."

Yes, those shootings happened at Virginia Tech, approx. 8 mins. up the road from my school, Radford University. There are several hundred Virginia State Police, and displaced students from Tech wandering around my campus, reeling from this disaster.

My childhood friend, Derek O'Dell (some of you probabaly saw him on the news) was a victim. We grew up together playing soccer. He is also the long time boyfriend of one my sister's closest friends. He was wounded in the arm, and watched several of his classmates, and his professor shot execution style through the head. Just from watching his interview, I can tell that he is no longer the same person he was, and that is depressing.

It's very sad the next post on this thread was saying they deserved it. Just proves to me how much immaturity and desensitation lurks on this site.

I understand that if guns are controlled, then only the bad people will get them illegally (which is an argument that I have strong evidence against, but see no need to present it here), but this guy wasn't a "bad" guy. He probably had no underworld connections, he had no nefarious motive.
He was a guy who bought a gun legally and was able to kill a lot of people. Assuming he had no high-up underworld (excuse the pun) connections, he would not have been able to access the firearm used in the massacre.

I understand this is a very heartfelt issue in the states, and it is something that greatly concerns me, too, but I just hope that this incident will at least make SOMEONE realise that something needs to be done about gun control in the US.

My mother called me few days after the incident crying....Derek was back at home visiting the church that he, my mother attend (and one that I was forced to attend until it became a chore for my mom to get me to go)...she handed me the phone and I had a very awkward, depressing conversation with Derek in which I could hear shakey voice trying to fake reassurance of being OK.

3. Since RU is in such close vicinity to Virginia Tech, the most Virginia State Police I've ever seen in one place were housed all over our campus, including about two dozen in my dorm. Students from Virginia Tech who wished to escape the confinds of dpression lurking over their college immediately turned to friends here at RU....I've never seen so many displaced, horrified people reeling from a tragedy that a good bit of them experienced first-hand. Have you ever seen someone shot in cold blood, Palmer?

Our school even tried to cancel the biggest party of the year here at Radford, with the excuse that we would be impacting an already devasting community with our antics (It's called Quadfest, and it's notorious in place far from here... www.urbandictionary.com , look it up, motherfucker.

Yes, those shootings happened at Virginia Tech, approx. 8 mins. up the road from my school, Radford University. There are several hundred Virginia State Police, and displaced students from Tech wandering around my campus, reeling from this disaster.

My childhood friend, Derek O'Dell (some of you probabaly saw him on the news) was a victim. We grew up together playing soccer. He is also the long time boyfriend of one my sister's closest friends. He was wounded in the arm, and watched several of his classmates, and his professor shot execution style through the head. Just from watching his interview, I can tell that he is no longer the same person he was, and that is depressing.

It's very sad the next post on this thread was saying they deserved it. Just proves to me how much immaturity and desensitation lurks on this site.

N2O: Guns are bad, and the wrong people shouldn't have them...but take away guns from the mass, and they ONLY people who have them will be the wrong ones...pretty scary huh?

The War or 1812 was a joint British/Canadian attempt to retake the newly freed American colonies back under British control. They succeeded in a surprise attack on Washington D.C., bured the original White House and capital building, and were victorious in a few other battles. The American forces never "Drove out" the British/Canadian forces because there was no "Front" to fight on, well there was and that was in Canada (Stony creek, where I live) and the British/Canadians pushed you guys all the way back to Niagra. It's quite hard fighting 3 enemys at once while your army is spread out through out the whole world. But these days are different such as the war in Iraq, all you need is a Cruise missile.

1. The Canadian forces were included with those numbers, they were using old out-dated weapons of their time, along with the Natives. The British officers trained Spanish mercenaries (No more then 4,000), the Natives also didn't have a big force either.

2. The Natives did not ambush any United States soldiers, they fought along the British Empire under a British general.

3. I would consider it a tie if that... When the United States
-Lost more soldiers.
-Invaded Canada and didn't succeed the take over.
-Had the upper hand with man power in most battles (Excluding the battle of New Orleans which was a very well fought battle for the United States).
The lives that were lost on the British side were between 277-385, not 2,000. But the tactic in that was they fought the British empire in narrow areas, which the British could not use their advantage in numbers.

And I hate to say it, but like in Vietnam (sucks for us) the initiator of the treaty is always considered the loser...In this case, the British Empire. In Vietnam, the United States' forces.
