Censorship is defined as the suppression of speech or deletion of communicative material which may be considered objective, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the government or media organizations. Under the first amendment the United States has the freedom of speech but when something is deleted or “bleeped” out, is that stepping on our rights? Other countries such as Belarus, Burma, China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia and Vietnam however are “internet black holes” where their internet access is strictly limited so that no news reaches them unless the government approves of it, which allows propaganda to spread easily. The rationale for censorship is that the censored material is harmful to the society, or can cause a disturbance in the peace. There are several different forms of censorship that control different information such as morale, political, religious, military and corporate. This can be in books, movies, internet, radio or music or anything that allows people to be expressive or learn.

Political censorship is when a government conceals, distorts, or falsifies information that its citizens have access to by suppressing or crowding out potentially harmful news or suppressing views that are contrary to those of the government in power. Without objective information, people will be unable to disagree with the government or governing body thus preventing rebellion. Bribery, discrediting of careers, imprisonment, and even assassination are ways information can be suppressed and kept in control. An example of crowding information from the news is when Bill Clinton ordered a missile attack on a suspected nuclear, chemical and biological weapons factory on Dec 16, 1998. The only problem is that the weapons factory was a pharmacy that helped the surrounding communities with their medications, not biological weapons. Right after it is learned that it was a pharmacy the Monica Lewinsky scandal surfaced and every news outlet was overrun with this news, not the mistake that killed innocent people. This is a way information isn’t physically deleted, only pushed aside out of the view.

Military censorship is keeping military intelligence away from the enemy. This is so the enemy does not have time to prepare for an attack, but often, militaries will also attempt to suppress politically inconvenient information even if that information has no actual intelligence value, such as civilian collateral damage or the damage to their own soldiers. The San Francisco Chronicle said “According to a 2005 VA (Veterans Association) study of 168,528 Iraqi veterans, 20 percent were diagnosed with psychological disorders, including 1,641 with PTSD” that is about 1 of every 5 soldiers. The post traumatic stress disorder and depression also leads to “...about 18 suicides per day among America's 25 million veterans." reports Keteyian Armen from ABC news. 18 suicides a day is about 6,570 per year. If the military does not think it is helpful it is not pushed into the main news.

Religious censorship is when objectionable material to a certain faith is removed. Some examples of censored material because of religious reasons are Galileo’s theory of heliocentric that states the earth is not in the center of the universe that the earth revolves around the sun. Publishing this ended with in him being put under house arrest for the rest of his life by order of the church because he was convicted of heresy. Movies banned because of religious reasons are Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, The Da Vinci Code, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut . These are a few films that people like Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare say "undermine the very roots of Christianity”.

Censorship in any form only shows how unstable and incapable a governing body is when they have to control every aspect of their citizen’s lives to maintain power. Abraham Lincoln knew that any power to control others life is too much power when he said “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent.” This quote still stands today in any part of the world because any one person governing over your life is far too many.
