View Full Version : Circular Logic Revisited

Since the first philosophical debates and discussions, circular logic has stood among the greatest enemies of rational discourse and thought-out reasoning. What cheery, spiteful antagonist has not asked about the stone God cannot lift, the edge of the universe, the nature of infinity? And who among us has not wearily scoffed at these (apparently) pointless questions, dismissing them as our predecessors did in derision and anger? The unfortunate truth of these situations is that circular logic remains an initially obvious dead end, and one capable of killing many a friendly discussion. Thus, such questions, statements and arguments are discarded without fail as intellectually ennervating, and remain unexamined to a surprising extreme.
However, when one chooses to delve beyond the glassy surface of so-called “unknowable” concepts such as infinity, it becomes apparent that, in fact, there may truly be more to know. For example, I’m sure my enlightened forum compatriots are all aware that reality is what you make it, but who among you has looked further, who has attempted to figure out exactly WHAT THAT MEANS!? When you attack the austere barriers of the supposedly unknowable, your mind is always challenged, often dissappointed, and sometimes rewarded. It is these mental challenges that shape our philosophy, and these paradoxes that broaden our minds.
Let us keep forever the principle of an open mind, no matter how absurd and useless the argument may seem; that we may truly advance ourselves for it, or at least enjoy the exercise.

Neb, I am glad to see you back.
And as to the post. Circular logic can and has been proved to be a true for of not only killing threads but in some rare cases, proving a point. I have even seen it once used to prove something but I was young and can not remember the details or much at all about the argument.

well circular logic does have its uses, for example in understanding dialectics such has hegel's since the hegelian dialectic seems to use circular thinking itself.

well if you believe in evolution, the egg came first...

well if you believe in evolution, the egg came first...
Actually, no, that is wrong, if you believe in evolution, the chicken would have evolved from something... so technically to be a "chicken" it would have to be full grown, (or at least past its growing stage) before it could be classified and then it would lay eggs. But as everyone knows, a chicken didn't evolve from anything...
Give a dog a bone.....
(If you didn't realize that the above paragraph was meant to stir up arguments, you have no point replying to this.)

The chicken would've come from the egg regardless of what it was classified as before it was fully grown.
!

also, obviously you aren't one of the ones intelligent enough to realize that ignoring something doesn't deem you intelligent, even if you insist it does.
and you're an idiot.
Finally, I ignored the tree one armed clap part of what you said.

Actually sometimes it takes a very intelligent person to deem something stupid enough not to acknowledge it. Therefore ignoring something may make you intelligent. Secondly, when your response to something you don't agree with is "your an idiot", well, that 95% of the time makes YOU the idiot. Third of all,
a chicken could not have come from a chicken egg before the chicken was evolved enough to be called a chicken, therefore the chicken came first. Because GOD MADE IT BUAAAAAAAAAAAh NIGGA!!!!!
