i plan on eventually getting some formal martial arts training once i get a job and shit, i was thinking of doing krav maga but if i can't find an instructor around here i'll probably go to one of the mma instruction places (though i'm not really interested in the sporting aspect of martial arts at the moment). I'm also interested in Jeet Kune Do which is essentially the forerunner of the mixed martial arts idea to begin with.
anyways anyone on here do any martial arts and have any recommendations for equipment, books, training techniques, style preferences........anything like that?
idk i guess this is just general discussion really.

Books royally suck when it comes to teaching martial arts. I would highly recomend finding someone to teach you personally. If you're broke you can always find a buddy who has a martial arts background to help out.

I'm a plain old striker i'm wicked at boxing. But i'm terrible at grappleing when I grapple i'm a wrestler but I would much prefer the fight 2 stay on foot. But yea you should just go 2 the ufc store online and order some shit from there if your serious about getting into it.

Martial arts is really all about personal preference. You just have to try everything once until you find what you really like and want to continue with that. Personally i'm a boxing guy but that's just because I feel it can benefit me the most in a fight. But I mean you can ask a thousand martial artists which style is best and you will get a thousand different answers for a thousand different reasons.

that's why i narrowed it to the three i mentioned.... they are all combinations of different styles and techniques, but for slightly different purposes
Jeet Kune Do was the Bruce Lee's hyrbrid style which basically was the forerunner to both krav maga and mma. technically all are mixed martial arts, but krav maga was tailored specifically to self defense and mma evolved into the sport that it is now (i'm not sure if the mma instruction places around where i am teach it as a sport or as a practical martial art, and Jeet Kune Do instruction would be a bitch to find....plus it's not as practical as krav maga.....at least from what i know about it)

Do you want instruction to learn how to actually defend yourself or just for fun?

a little bit of both....i need a hobby of some sort, something to keep me in shape, and learning some self defense techniques is never a bad thing.
basically until i get formal instruction i think i'd just be me fucking around for fun and possibly learning some things, but i don't expect to learn that much more as far as self defense without formal instruction (such as the reactionary reflexes and such only really developed through sparring and shit like that)
then again if i get some friends involved i might be able to do that, so i'm not sure

I wrestled when i was younger and found that to be very helpful and fun. You can learn several different style, greeko-roman, freestyle, etc... Plus, for me, it helped build balance and coordination. I would not have been able to do any MMA if I hadn't had wrestling first.

Krav Maga was designed to kill, and Jeet Kune Do is extre***y practical. Bruce designed it because he was tired of all the useless shit in other martial arts, like stances and stuff, and designed it to end the fight as quickly as possible.

Ju-Jitsu is great. I never got into just boxing or judo.

JJ and Judo are very similar, JJ is more focused on the submission aspect of sub wrestling and judo is more focused on the wrestling aspect. But when it comes down to it, they're basically the same thing.

it depends on how u like to fight. idk a/b wrestling, but
strong punches and kicks--karate/taekwondo/etc
faster moves--kung fu
joint manipulation and the like--hapkido/aikido
or are you more interested in something else?

Fuck TKD, that is probably the worst one, you won't kick anyone's ass without it unless they're using TKD, and even then you probably won't.
I say this from experience, having a TKD faggot try to do his flying kick bullshit recently, just had to step in close and elbow him twice in the near face and do a one leg td, layed into that motherfucker and it was game over for Mr.Goku

I love working with my elbows and knees on a punch bag, I am seriously thinking about going into muay tai. 8 points of contact sounds good to me.

Real TKD is actually very effective, the problem is that about 90% of the TKD (and a large amount of karate and jiu jitsu) dojos are what people call "McDojo's" meaning you can go in and pretty much buy a belt, they offer no real discipline and no real training, or very little.
I've known a few kids who are like black belts at ages 12 and shit.. like come on as if this mother fucker is a black belt.

Sambo (russian mix between plenty martial arts) and pancrace (maybe pankrationn english).
Tha both are pretty effective.

Pancrase Hybrid Wrestling isn't a martial art, it was a Mixed Martial arts organization, Bas Rutten is probably the most famous fighter to ever fight in that organization (for those of you who don't know, Bas is arguably one of the best pfp fighters to ever live) Pankration isn't really around anymore.. it was just a combination of wrestling and boxing. I'm not sure which you're talking about :S
Sambo is pretty awesome though, but my opinion is kind of biased since it's very similar to judo, and I'm a judo freak.

Prankation is still learned in France (dunno for the rest of Europe). French boxing is stiff (?) but pretty effective

I say start off with whatever pleases you, get good at it, read the Tao of Jeet Kune Do (obviously by Bruce Lee) and Meditations on Violence (i dont remember the author) and pick your path from there. I dont think you can go wrong if you understand JKD. Though, thats my personal view.
oh, and i dont know how well you'll be physically built at one of these american dojos, so you'll probably want to add in a good exercise regimen and a healthy diet :P

Krav Maga, I'm biased as a jewish youth, but I could care less.
I've used this in real situations, I've been jumped by skinheads with knives, bats, and horrible attitudes.
I never wanted something flashy, if your going to fight, you want it to end fast and on your terms.

I used to fight amatuer mma, (i did BJJ and Boxing). And then i tore a ligament in my left wrist. I have a permanent bolt in that wrist now and i cant fight with it. I now Fence. I only need my right hand to use the sword.
Be careful, you can get messed up for life. Im only 18 and cant punch with my left hand.
