Sorry to revive but what part of Cali? it's been a long time that I've been crazy about jumping freights in the Bay Area. Some of um have hundreds of cars, so fucking cool. I'm more interested in shipping crate depots atm though. I'd still love to ride some rails tho

southern california mostly, are you familiar with the rail lines up north?
I really want to ride 'em but i'm weighing my options. I am currently leaning toward not dying young and mangled up in the middle of nowhere, parts splattered all over the California country side.

I'm up near SF and there are few train depots around here. I haven't had much experience but I don't think it's very hard, especially at night.:D I've watched the same train for 30min over in Oakland with hundreds of cars! Unless your super un-coordinated (Drunk) I doubt falling off or falling under the train would be a problem I didn't really see that as a legit hazard when I was thinking about riding. I was going to look up the routes of a few freights heading south, and a few going north and plan a short trip from that. Or just ride for a day and see where I ended up and just wing it on the way back. I've just been looking for a friend crazy enough to come along, and the weather to get better for now.

Let me know if ya give it a shot, I'll do the same.

Is there a spot where that train is stopped or at a slow roll? Some friends told me that I shouldn't do it without someone experienced. They also said if you don't know where it's going you could get stranded in the middle of nowhere. haha. If you do it you should come down to southern California, where you've now got a friend.
let me know

Yeah there is, since the freights are so long is goes slowly through the city depots so I could easily run along side and jump on. I was looking for a map of routes but from what I've found it'd be pretty hard to find when a certain train would be passing by. Im almost certain I'd get lost but thats half the fun eh? For sure! SoCal would be the smartest place to ride to I figure, I know at least one train connects SF n LA hah.
