I know there are other threads on this but i cant be bothered reading them. I watched this programme on the history channel yesterday about this prophet who lived in the 1600s who said the world is gunna end in 2012. He also predicted christ would come back in that year. Sounds lie bullshit to me but he predicted one thing thats true. During 2012 theres gunna be 3 eclipses. They also said on the programme that 2012 is when the mayan calendar ends. Anyway...What do YOU think?

This, along with all of the other scares like with date "6/6/06" and the backmasked Stairway to Heaven, are just hoaxes to get a rise out of people. If the world is going to end, it definetely won't be on a date that is anywhere near what the Mayans predicted.

HAHA, lol. The magnetic poles change every 25,000 years or so, the only side effects would be a mix up on compasses. If you apply some critical thinking skills, you'd realise we'd only fall of the planet if there were no gravity for some reason.
Regarding 'predicting' the end of the Earth; I have a book filled with infallible scientific evidence that the world will end in 1999.... yeah.
You may be able to twist his ambigious verses into something that resembles 9/11 or the boxing day tsunami, but actual predictions? Nah.

Before the longcount calendar there was a 52 year calendar. Then they went to the long count calendar which ends on 12/21/12. Now because it ends on that date, people think somehow the world <as we know it> is going to end.

I'm sure you all know this.

Now this doesn't necessarily mean we all die, for example there is the theory that it becomes a new era, the era of "enlightenment".

Though you'd think that the mayans get that when the calendar ends you just go to the new one...

i, for one, think some crazy shit's gonna go down in 2012. i saw this crop circle that depicted the exact alignment of all the planets in our solar system on 12/23/2012. or maybe it was 12/21/2012. one of those two... i forget which, but if you're interested enough just do a little research and you're bound to find it somewhere online. it wasn't some crazy jazz about the planets lining up or something; it was just a diagram of how our solar system is going to look on that day, drawn out in a crop circle... as if our ET homies were showing us that that date is going to be significant.

Actually, it is scientific fact that over the years of earth's existence the magnetic poles have switched polarity many times. It is evidinced in the iron bits on the layers under the sea, and the way they are oriented as the layers go down. Look it up. It's pretty interesting. So, if they did switch polarity again, it wouldn't be a big deal, because they've done that before.

That's true. The polarity of the earth causes metals to point in different directions as they settle on the ocean floor, and it can be observed easily in the form of different colors of stripes in the sand near under water volcanoes. It's shown pretty clearly in the diagram below.
