Here on Earth we are completely oblivious to the grand scale of things in the universe. Much in the same way we perceive dust particles as being insignificant, universally speaking we are little more than dust in the wind. The actual scale of things is incomprehensible; just thinking about how insignificant we are really bring things into perspective.

I was actually thinking about that last night. we dont ever just go out side and look at the stars any more. how far we are from the next star.

I think the nearest star is Proxima Centauri, and it's about 4.3 light-years away; relatively speaking that's not all that far away.....

I'm not really sure how insignificance is supposed to make me feel... besides insignificant of course.
Should I be in awe? Should I be depressed my life has so little impact? I'm not really sure.

I did that with my girl last night actually.
Anyway, I consider this all the time, and realized that we aren't significant in any grandscale, but that's not any reason to not live life full.

Our perception is too limited to look beyond what we are told to believe. We place too many mental boundary on our minds, and after time passes those boundarys become invisible and become part of our perception. I believe the only way to actually come close to looking beyond, and expanding our perception is to choose the spiritual path. To first be able to look at our lives and the earth and try to understand it, otherwise we are trying to jump steps. We first must understand ourselves, and why we think the way we do before we expand our perception to unviversal. - or so thats what i think.. O.o

We are germs in the eyes of the universe. We think that we are advanced and are in control, but all of our species and history could be wiped out just as easily as the bacteria on our hands when we wash them. We are truly insignificant.

true, just like the old days where zeus still used to throw some thunder once in a while.

But how do we know zeus is nothing but the collected imagination of a civilization? O.o
N0M4N
April 12th, 2009, 06:42 PM
i guess you can't know it. you just think there is a god, or a zeus, or you don't. and people believe in it because there is no other explanation.

i guess their belief was proved when zues threw down lightening in thunderstorms. But its easy to understand why they believed he was real, becuz the lightening proved it. But the sugar plum fairy aka GOD, everyone believes in today is pure faith. Nothing to prove otherwise. Just pure blind faith..

April 12th, 2009, 06:50 PM
yup. but what makes me NOT believe in the sugar plum fairy ( good job on that :P ) is that if he is almighty, he's an ass. if i would be almighty, there wouldn't be stuff like cancer, or hunger. too bad most people don't think that way. or maybe not.
exial
April 12th, 2009, 06:53 PM
But thats where faith comes in. We arent supposed to question why their is cancer or hunger becuz its all part of "gods plan". I for one will not accept that explanation. Maybe the truth of why hunger, aids, and cancer exists is simply beyond our ability to understand, thats why we arent supposed to question "gods plan".. hmm..
N0M4N
April 12th, 2009, 06:56 PM
maybe, but that is exactly what people used to do thousands of years ago. if something happens which you can't explain, blame it on god. we don't know why people have cancer or aids, of why africa sucks so hard, but god wanted it this way.

April 12th, 2009, 06:59 PM
(im not defending the belief in god) But maybe God put us on this earth and said: I have gifted you with life, and i will not intervene. Becuz truth is most of the deseases today are man made, either from contamination or pollution. And hunger exists becuz of human greed. I will continue this debate tomorrow, got some things to take care of.

i'm not trying to give proof that God exists, but
u guys have said that we're germs in the eyes of the universe, and that we're a primitive and arrogant species. So we can't really expect to understand the universe, or God. So maybe he does exist, but not in the primitive way we envision.
N0M4N
April 13th, 2009, 09:14 AM
that's all very possible, and we can't prove anything for now, but if god won't intervene, like i said before, he's an ass.

April 14th, 2009, 09:10 PM
maybe intervening would keep something great from happening, idk. but ya that's crazy how small we are! and the slide show thing didn't even start comparing stars to galaxies or clusters of galaxies

And the anarchist replied:
