Are we, as humans, an advanced race? Is our technology advanced to the point that extraterrestrials would deem us worthy of sharing their technology with us?

Yes, certain humans are advanced. The powers-that-be possess technology that the average Joe could't even imagine.
Others are simple.
In conclusion, I voted yes, but the term 'human' is too broad.

How is the term "human" too broad? You want to get all scientific and say "homo sapien"? Its not like there are other candidates on this primitive planet that can compete with humans in terms of technology.

Considering the fact that we're advanced enough to slow our own evolution by environmental control, I'd say yes.

When I said the term 'human' is too broad, I merely meant we cannot say all humans are technologcically advanced because not every individual will able to fathom how to even work a toaster.
People are too different to be placed under one spectrum in terms of the question you asked.

I didn't say humans as individuals, but as a race, like everyone working together as one. Most people have potential to understand and create technology, but that is a pointless endeavor when they aren't even educated.

We are a .72 on the Kardashev scale
The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement. The scale is only theoretical and in terms of an actual civilization highly speculative; however, it puts energy consumption of an entire civilization in a cosmic perspective. It was first proposed in 1964 by the Soviet Russian astronomer Nikolai Kardashev. The scale has three designated categories called Type I, II, and III. These are based on the amount of usable energy a civilization has at its disposal, and the degree of space colonization. In general terms, a Type I civilization has achieved mastery of the resources of its home planet, Type II of its solar system, and Type III of its galaxy.
We are far from advanced.

I actaully knew about that for a long time. I believe it is true too.
Put it this way: We might think that ant colony is primitve and such, but a civilization thats millions of years older than ours might view us like ants. I'm actually surprised of people's confidence in us as a civilization.

I definitely have confidence in our species as a whole.
We may have taken a while to get where we are now, but we definitely are not uncivilized or dis advanced.

I'm actually depressed in knowing that I am part of a young and primitive race, and that the promises of technology that's the stuff of science fiction, will never come into fruition during the time of my short and insignificant life span.
Oh well, I guess I might as well help in making what we already have better, so that the next generation of people can build upon it and further improve it, and so on and so forth.

I'm still a bit perplexed as to why far more people voted "yes". I mean come on, we supposedly live in an advanced society, yet so many live about as sick and famished people. They are never even given a chance to participate in advancing our species, for they are just too busy trying to survive as it is. It's great how a select few live in the upper crust of society and could give a damn for the well being of everyone else.

I thought you were talking about our society as a whole, not individual parts. I'm sure any society different from ours (somewhere out there) have the same problem with the big gap between people who make a difference and people who don't. I don't think that has anything to do with how advanced we are.

Well I am in a way, because society IS a group of people who are interdependent of eachother. Why can't we just stop with this pointless competition for money, and just grow up and work together? Remember, its better to act as one, as it sure gets things done more efficiently.
I really dispise capitalism right now, and greedy people too.

I would posit no, just based on the fact of poverty and disease, like you said methtownblue.
America might be more advanced, but society as a whole is not.
We can't just view the question from a Western civilization viewpoint.
DollShank
March 15th, 2009, 04:26 PM
It isn't just a western viewpoint.
I guess we really aren't advanced in a way of taking care of one another.

Right, and that's one of the most important thing.
A civilization isn't advanced if it can't overcome some of its deepest emotion and mental issues, and that's one of them.

How is viewing this from a western view point a deepest emotion and mental issue? Most people just see the world as whats out side there window

Sorry you misunderstood, I meant that the fact we don't care for each other shows that we still aren't advanced.
A Class III society would still have problems, but it would have had to overcome petty issues such as race and religion in order to organize an entire system of galaxies.
We still go around shooting at each other because that guy wears a different kind of hat than the next.

Thanks John, its good to see you and others agree with what I'm getting at.
Even if a Class III civilization had problems, it still would have millions of years of evolution, giving it plenty of time to keep these to a minimal.

u know how theres 2D (dimension), 3D I've been taught, not by no schoolteacher, that when u achieve a certain level u can see 4D, and even 5D Has anyone anyone have thoughts on that. They say 4D is what like ghosts or spirits could be. But I truly believe that could possibly be the answer to some of the things i've been seeing. Like, we could both be looking at the same tree. I see the tree as you, but I also see more than that. Its tricky to explain but has anyone experienced stuff like this or know what i mean? (And i'll be sober too).

O and as i was typing that message rob zombie came on the radio with the song devil man as if to answer my question. That shit happens alot to me. If anyone understands me somewhat i would like to talk to u

That seems to be irrelevent to the original topic of this thread. You should have made a different thread and then ask, because you are going to confuse people.

Well if i keep explaining. I swear i added to this conversation yesterday. and without that post u may not understand what im about to say.
These beings or whatever i see and communicate with sometimes.(dont ask i would never be able to explain) I have reason to believe that they can inhabit u and somewhat be a part of u for awhile and make u think \Whatever they choose\ And that is why it is part of the question do we have free will (at all times) I loose my train of thought what im wanting to say cause i cant type that fast. It's best to have a conversation like what i'm talking about in person
I was just wondering if anyone has come to some of the realizations i have come to, cause i would like to talk to THEM

So you are talking about free will? If so, then you are in the wrong thread.

how can you say we're advanced if we have nothing to compare ourselves with?

Many believe (Myself included) that Humans are one of the most underevolved and technologically challenged races in the universe(s). Which would change if we could eliminate the "Races" we've created on earth.

Don't necro, and, would the elimination of race solve our problems? Really? What about religions, and belief systems etc? Without race, would the problems associated with those things go away? Why?

Sorry about bumping the old post, wasn't thinking straight
Yeah I actually meant to include religion, though that could still exist everyone would just have to believe the same thing. Just the illusion that any two humans are different would have to go away I guess. If those distractions were gone we'd have more time to focus on things like space travel / medical advances

we ARE an advanced race. theres no arguing that. just because we arn't as advanced as what we believe is possible technologically, it dosn't mean we arn't advanced. take a look around you. you don't see birds or dogs creating computers and going on forums to argue philosophy LOL

Humans sure are advanced. Having created a lot of great ideas and stuff. Like torturing..dont see much that in animal kingdom. Also cannibalism is a great one. Teabaging, fashion, those plastic toys that go "squeek", beheadings- Really love that one seriously, suicide bombing, fox news, Bill O Reily.
Face it. We didn`t evolve from monkeys. We are monkeys

Woohoo! Monkeys with semi-auto weapons!
Just felt the need to expand on this idea.
We aren't too advanced though.
For one, human is not a race.
Somewhat advanced in many aspects, but no matter how advanced we are, people have just lost their common sense in pretty much everything.
EDIT*
Oh, Wolkkkk, I didn't see that last post... that's what I was trying to say.
Sure some annimals are cannibals though, but that's besides the point.
Essentially, we are just another animal looking to discover more.

Hmm i think if things like race and religion was gone we would probably hate people for shoe size and hair color. There is always reason to hate, and always people who want to find a new reason.
