View Full Version : Christianity, A Religion Of Peace And Love?

I have grown quite sick of these bullshit claims that Christianity is a religion of peace and acceptance, along with rather comical claims by a few on this site that forced exposure to Christian oaths will somehow enhance one's world view, and make them somehow more tolerant:

http://www.humanitas-international.org/showcase/chronography/documents/luther-jews.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_and_antisemitism

Arcigay, an Italian gay-rights group, estimates that 150 to 200 gay men are known to be murdered annually in Italy because of their sexual orientation. They suspect that the total number is much higher, because many families of origin suppress information about the victim. Franco Grillini, psychologist and president of Arcigay stated that Italy is "...in the face of a real and true national emergency." He links the deaths to "social violence generated by homophobia." He called upon the government to "end this wave of homicides and to begin seriously removing obstacles that prevent all homosexuals from living a peaceful life in full safety." Gay rights groups recommended a number of proposals to the Italian government in mid-1996. One suggestion was to appoint a government minister to be a liaison to the gay and lesbian community. This is frequently done in Northern European countries. As of the beginning of 1998, there has been no response.

Mr. Grillini blames the Vatican and the Roman Catholic hierarchy of creating a "homophobic atmosphere" that was "in large part responsible for this culture of violence."

On 1998-JAN-14, a gay man doused himself with gasoline near the Bernini colonnades of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. This is a location that is a center of pilgrimage and the scene of papal ceremonies. He set himself on fire and attempted to run towards the main portals of the basilica. He collapsed unconscious before reaching the entrance. He suffered burns to 90% of his body and was later reported in serious condition in a Rome hospital. He had written a note before his immolation which stated that his family, the Roman Catholic church and society did not understand the problems that he faced as a homosexual. The Vatican has denied that the man's protest was aimed at the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to homosexual activity.

"Here, great vigilance is needed. Faithfulness to the Declaration [UDHR] implies the exclusion of all efforts which seek, under the guide of so-called "new rights", to include abortion (cf. article 3), to leave physical integrity unprotected (ibid.), or to undermine the heterosexual, monogamous family (cf. article 16). Some are currently striving for these harmful goals, seeking to deprive some human beings of their fundamental rights, and to impose upon the weakest new forms of oppression (cf. articles 4 and 5). The lies which undergird these efforts inevitably lead to violence and barbarity and introduce the 'culture of death'."

There are many parts of the Christian/Catholic church that I deeply disagree with but there are genuine good souls out there who do a lot of good work. My old high school's chaplain Fr Therry Herbert at the age of 63 cycled across the nulabor to raise money for several charitable organisations. Even some of the most narrow minded bigots in the christian church have done work to benefit the needy and the ho***ess (Reverend Fred Nile anyone?). I think what you'll find is the higher you climb the ladder to the more sheltered and secluded levels of church the more prone to corruption and the like. I myself have met a group of Marist brother's monks who believe that anyone regardless of their sexuality can marry whomever they like. Organisations like Mission Australia who are Catholic based raise alot of aid money for third world nations and put it to good use funding fresh water and renewable food programs. St Vincent de Paul society and the Salvation Army supply a shiteload of food, clothes and blankets to those less fortunate in the area.
I'm all for teaching love and acceptance and doing charity work but for the reasons you mentioned above (and a few more) I am not a practicing Christian.

There is nothing wrong with Chritianisy. .ABSOLUTLY NOTHING..

the people following God are human and make mistakes, and you get your info, and many other people.. from the mistakes of humans.. not Christianity itself.. what i dont get is why none of you can see that...

Yes, there fucking is.

Christianity exists to control the people, like all religion. Christianity is a Racist religion at it's core (Look at the Anti-Semitism in many of it's documents). It's an idiotic religion full of lies and contradictions. The people should not have this evil forced upon them. Nor should the clergy be allowed to make their living through fraud and lies.

I believe the point he is making is that the message behind it all has been skewed and ruined by misguided men. The core values of christianity and almost all reigions are usually those of love and peace.

Just because there are bad Christians doesn't mean Christ taught a doctrine of hate.

but I have a feeling you were indoctrinated from a very early age to be a Marxist, so all the logic in the world won't change your view of religion and economics.

edit*
I could find examples of atheists, communists, facists, Muslims, Christians, and Hindus killing people for being different. You can't really judge any of those groups by the actions of a few though, you have to look at the teachings. I doubt there are any catholic churches anywhere teaching people to kill gays...

I'd also like to say I find it comical that someone who talks about killing zionist pigs is pointing out the apparent antisemitism of Martin Luther :P

The bible is full of hateful shit, god always smiting etc... Christianity (or at least maojr branches of) are based on hate, by hateful people.

Zionism is a Political Theory, not a religion. Plenty of Christian Zionists....

Indoctrinated to be a Marxist? With a family full of people with no particular Political views, or moderate Capitalists (very moderate, i must say, very moderate).

Just because someone uses something to manipulate doesn't mean the thing itself is wrong.

EX:
A president says, "In the name of America, wipe out those orphans!" (Extreme, but just making a point)
Now, America isn't to blame, the president is. Get me?

Matthew 5:24
You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder. and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Matthew 5:38-42
You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Matthew 5:43-48
43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Romans 13:9
The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet,"and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Leviticus 19:18
Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

Galatians 5:14
The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

In short, the answer is yes.

The issue here is that God is a God that doesn't change.
Change only applies to beings inside of time, and the Judeo-Christian God is outside of time by definition.
This is the same God that commanded the Israelites to go and kill entire civilizations just because he said so or they were in the way.
Of course, the Bible puts this off on that the people were disobeying God or didn't believe.
If this is the same God... you finish the sentence.

And yes, the OT and NT are very much similar in some ways, as one leads to the next, in fact the whole point of the OT is to lead to the Gospels which lead to Revelations.
The entire Bible is structured around the Gospels, because (according to it) that's the most important point in history.

I have seen more hate and violence from Christians towards Wiccans, homosexuals, members of opposing political parties, etc., than from any other group of people.
This is from personal experience, not world experience.
I don't expect perfection from a Christian, but I expect improvement.
Religion is meant to improve the human condition, not make it worse.

christianity has brought nothing but false hope and death to the world. think about all the lives lost, the spanish crusades and other events of that nature. And a christian stand there and thinks their better than the rest because they filled the hole in their heart with a "god" I believe what can be proven and seen, until jesus comes down from some cloud with a fatty blunt and has a talk with me about life fuck it all its bullshit. Deny the cross. Deny your so called maker

Exactly, but it is forced upon them in troves, and the clergy IS allowed to make their living on fraud and lies. Its the beauty of it all, those with the "knowledge" have the power to do what they please in the name of "God". As long as there are gullible people out there to swallow their bilge water. That is what they count on of course, the longing for belonging the people seek. Those who live in great expectation often react fully to something partial.

Yeah, I was raised Lutheran. Fuck Jews, there needs to be some kind of intervention to teach these people manners. No offense, Judaism is a respectable religion, its just the followers that misinterpret and change the rules to better fit their life styles. Then again, all religions branch off into bull shit lies and scandal.

It sure is a darn shame that "Son Of "God"" thing didn't work on the Romans. History shows a hell of a lot of events where followers of Judaism are exiled and eradicated. 1488
