Deathlord, I think you are being a bit unfair. There are so many java tuts, it's not even funny. For a beginner who knows very little, trying to siphon the good from the bad is next to impossible. I have uploaded a book given to me by ishkur, it should be very helpful towards learning java.

I will also update this with a XHTML and CSS book ishkur recommended to me, it is uploading as we speak. It is well written, and although it might seem cumbersome at first, editing and updating websites in the fashion shown becomes much easier than before.
And here is the link.

I'd start out by learning Python first. You can't really do much with it hacking wise but its a great starter to get the idea of what programming is about. Lets you learn about databases, lists, algorithm...stuff like that.
After a few months of that, move on to C++...then Java
You can do what you want but thats the steps I took and I'm a senior in college in the Computer Science field and it's worked for me.

How can you claim that Python is not a hacker's programming language? Its rapid development capabilities, coupled with its integrated networking and file handling makes it a grade A hacking language.
Learning Python for a few months, then going to C++? I can't imagine the frustration that a person would feel after going from Python to C++.
Both are Turing Complete, so there's not a damned thing you can do in one that you can't do in the other: but, that has no meaning when it comes to how much effort one must put into the model of their program. I could write the same program in Python and C++, and, yet, spend orders of magnitude less time working on the Python version.
Why?
Because Python is a better language.
And then, you suggest to move from C++ over to Java, another horrid language. It would be typical of a CS student at a poorly taught university to suggest one learn Java. And here you are, doing it.
I'm the type of insane person who will play with something that everyone hates, just to see why. Well, I spent a lot of time learning Java. And I now tend to agree with those who oppose it.
Fuck Java.
Its really a grandeur of the accomplishments of our college system, when people are learning how to program for the first time AT college.
If you're going to enter a CS related field, and have any success whatsoever in a marketability sense, you need to have an active interest in your craft. Enough so that you've already mastered several languages and understand a good number of the underlying concepts being covered.
If you take that idea and run with it, you will be so much happier in the long run.
Instead of spending hours doing some shitty sorting algorithm homework, you could be writing GA's to find efficient means of solving square roots. Or writing ray tracing libraries in Lisp.
And if you expect to be able to program at any competent level, whatsoever, you need to understand several different aspects of mathematics.
If you cant comprehend moderately paced number theory and abstract algebra, god help your poor soul when you want to write an efficient program.

Lisp for example ;)
you could be writing GA's to find efficient means of solving square roots. Or writing ray tracing libraries in Lisp.
Or you could even be using Lisp to write a program that can efiiciently calculate the number of BTU's it would take to raise a 1 fluid oz of coke 1 F/C.
But, of course, you've never done that! :D
