defrag first, then manually edit the partition table, leave enough free space on your windows partition that you will think you will need, and make sure it's over the used amount according to windows (if windows reports the drive to be smaller than the partition editor does, make sure you just assume windows was leaving out files and add on the extra space)...make a fat32 partition which you will use to share between the 2 operating systems (storage, so it can be as big/small as you want), make a main partition for linux, of the file type ext3 (flag as bootable, make in root of the drive ((if incorrect, that's what i do, and it works, so whatever))), make a swap partition which is double your ram, install fedora core on the ext3, w/o the boot loader, install the boot loader at /boot and make sure it is at the begining of the sector...(/boot should be at the begining of the drive just in case your computer is old and shitty....), then from there you're stuck with figuring out how to get the windows boot loader to recognize fedora, as i do not know that...im sure you could google it.....

most importantly, dont do any of this till someone confirms that im not crazy......

oh, and the reason that we're not installing the boot loader at the MBR (master boot record) is because winxp/2000 and some antivirii have problems with it not being the windows boot loader...ive discovered that the grub boot loader is better than the windows one in my opinion, and does in fact detect winxp...but my windows wont boot...gonna have to restore the boot and master boot records one of these days to fix that....

The good thing about open source is that it has very good documention

http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/fedora-install-guide-en/fc5/

Fedora is a good OS, the base install comes with 90% of what the desktop user needs.

Windows will not recognize a linux/bsd OS. If it was me i would install the boot loader in the MBR, Fedora is a very up to date OS. Its never failed to setup the windows OS in the boot loader for me. even it it dont, editing grub is as easy as going to /boot/grub/grub.conf and tell it were to find the windows partion then "grub-install" in a shell

Edit :: what is Anim8or? There is a program in linux that will run windows programs some of them anyway call "Wine"

anim8or is his graphics program, the problem with it being on the MBR was that people experienced windows fucking up from it, and everything advises against it....mine has no problems detecting windows on it's own, i use grub, just i fucked up windows.....actually, windows will not recognize a linux/bsd os, yes, but you can configure it by making a binary file that tells it about it, and putting it in the records of the windows boot loader in windows, so that could be done.....the major problem was with windows fucking up cuz the mbr wasnt windows' own....my problem was i damaged the memory, so i should just make it free space and tag it on to my linux partition right now, but im too damn lazy, and that would inspire my little brother to get more files on this fuckin computer, and i dont want that.....

Dear lord.

I strongly appose two OSs on one hard drive. You either need interchangable hard drives(like me) or if you really have to, use a boot loader. It gets real mucky with one hardrive.

reason for having 2 os's on one hard drive is cuz you can easily share the files between the two if you still need certain aspects of one os.....

yeah..if ive got a 250 gig hard drive, i want to split it rather than have to switch hard drives all the time....

Have you heard of the lock tray cases? It's pretty easy and nice but you need to by special cases for your hardrives.

Very conveniant if you're willing to shell out the extra cash.

I'll take pics in half a week if you want.

Again i would install grub to the MBR. Trust me ive messed with linux for years all my servers run linux, Home computers are 90% linux. If for some reason windows does not boot right, pm your ip and a ssh account with the id in the wheel group or root. and ill fix it. its going to save you alot of trouble using grub as the boot loader. sure you anti virus "might" grumble but ok it. as for using 2 HD for a dual boot system, thats what your doing as a partition. Just its not 2 physical HD's

yeah...i accidentally set the swap partition of my friend's computer i set up for him on his second hard drive, so it wouldnt load the swap right....im hoping he never has a problem with it (512 ram, so it shouldnt be), cuz if he does, i have to set it up so that it runs the second hd when it starts up, and that's a waste of my time, and makes booting slower....

all you have to do is edit the fstab file /etc/fstab

Tell it where the swap partition is
/dev/hda2 none swap sw 0 0

That is my entry in my fstab. before you reboot test fstab with
sudo mount -a
Just to make sure you have it setup right or the system will not boot.

aah, goodie...that makes it easier....i figured it would be something like that....but i would have to go to his house, as i doubt he's gonna make a ssh acount for me to do it with....he's probably gonna make me go over there any way cuz he fuckered up his sound devices in windows.....and aparently he cant fix it....
