If someone put it on their computer to spy on them it's obviously running on their computer but not installed so it won't be their. What do you mean bought? Did your friend buy it or did somebody else put it on there?

Well, first thing you need to do is stop the keylogger. I'm mildy lazy and won't check the site for the keylogger to figure out how to uninstall it but to stop it read on.
I believe he's operating on windows so go start>run and type "msconfig" without the quotes.
Click the final tab that says startup and find a program that looks suspicious/looks like the name of the keylogger. Click it off.
If you couldn't find it then they either programmed around it or you need to start up in safe mode. (Pressing f8 when you log on and doing the same process as above).
When you're looking through the system files make sure you have "view hidden/system files" clicked to be able to see. Although, there are still ways around that. (control panel>folder options>view tab>click the ability to see folders)
Hmm, I guess that half helped. Repost if you're having troubles.

i doubt they would run if he used a live cd any way cuz it doesnt run anything that is on the harddrive, and i doubt that the prog is a part of the bios.....altho that would make an interesting virus....attatches it's self to the bios so that when you start the computer it starts first....

partition your comp, rewrite your files onto a disk and run your comp on the partition

Just have him go into notepad and type;
Mom. Dad. I'm really disappointed that you can't trust your own son. I feel like it's a big disrespect, and an invasion of my privacy to have this keylogger on th computer. You don't trust me? Even you child deserves a right not to have every thought read out to his parents, which is basically what is happening when you log what I do.
Or something to that effect. It'll guilt trip them like hell, and make them realize he knows about it, and having it there is worthless cause he'll watch what he types/does.
