well, with acknowledgment that there is probably few on this site that can help me, here's the problem:

well, i did some updating to graphics drivers the other day on my ubuntu partition, and once i finished, everything seemed to work, then i ran the file i needed to to start a few addons i had added, and that didnt work, so i exited it, and restarted cuz the troubleshooting section in the install guide said to do that....then it ran fine, and i was screwin around trying to figure out all the special features it added, like the ability to switch between windows with ctrl+alt+left or right, and i was seein what it had added, so i pressed ctrl+alt+backspace, and the thing exited X, which is the main graphics driver, and then it wouldnt load, so i did some work on reversing everything i did, (i still had terminal and all my live cd's), and i got it working again, only now, it wont load the panel with everything, and it doesnt even try to load it on startup.....if i could load it, i know exactly how to fix it, but i cant load it, so i ask you, is there a way to edit the files that start when you start ubuntu without actually being in ubuntu?

and does anyone know how to reverse this massive error.....

(i think i need to do some research on what i did when i ran the other program, so i will be looking at that at first, but i hope someone on here can be of some help....)

hmm i learned what a partition was once...i forgoted...i think the problem is that i quit computer club to hang out with my girl friend not that i minded doing that

meh....you are of no help...but i doubt anyone would have been...i started thinking when it screwed up, and i came to the conclusion that it wasnt even trying to run the desktop, so i figured i would just tell it to install the desktop to see if the desktop was even there, turns out it wasnt.....its all back to normal now....even all my configurations are still there...so no need to worry any more people...i fixeded it....

a partition is a part of your harddrive which is configured to be used as a certain type of file system, kinda like a really big folder.....you all have atleast one on your computer that is where windows is located, and possibly two if you have a recovery console which has its own partition.....

...im only 16, and i really only started taking more interest into hacking in the past year....ive had no more experience than u have....that and i didnt have a computer for like 9 fuckin months, so i had nothing to fuck with, and i only recently installed linux on my computer, and fucked up my windows partition beyond repair (im just gonna salvage files and scrap the whole thing for windows 2000 {it was xp}).....

wait...that doesnt change the fact that im better than you.....whatever.....

.............if you wanna learn more about hacking, i suggest a website like hackthissite.org or enigmagroup.org.......i havent seen many people on here who are too interested in hacking.....

well i have done a little on hackthissite but it seemed quite unrealistic even the realistic missions

im not sure what your tring to do for sure. but yes you can edit files from the term either use nano or MC you will have do install MC its not in the basic ubuntu install. use apt get to install it = apt-get install mc

all the config files are in the /etc folder /etc/X11/xorg.conf is the X config file
the boot up scripts are in /etc/init.d/

if your having troulbe geting X to work look at the log file in /var/log/xorg.0.log
and set your settings in xorg.conf it match what the log file shows it very simple. if you cant get it working. I can fix it for you via ssh. if you like

what exactly module did you install btw nvida ?

i fixed it...somehow the whole desktop got uninstalled...i think ima disable the ctrl+alt+backspace, i was installing nvidia and another program i discovered which i think was called compiz, but i have decided ill just stick with using a mouse for the things it offered to let you use the kbd for.....its not worth the hastle......

i might install nvidia tho, cuz i think it be useful....

I thought i would add Gnome is a good Desktop. but..... i perfer KDE it has more eye candy ( I like eye candy :D ) just my 2 cents .

i was gonna switch to KDE, but i dont like the innocent bubbly look of it...i prefer the clean-cut lack of character of gnome.....if i could change all of the icons to ones i prefer, and completely customize the look and feel of it, i would probably switch to it....but im fine with gnome instead of having to go thru the trouble of editing it.....

you can make kde look the way you want the the nice thing about open source

www.kde-look.org has a lot of themes and icons

mmmhmm...i might just look into this...i did like the way kde worked...

...edit: im installing the kde desktop as an optional session.....(yay, this is why i love ubuntu)....all i have to type is one command, and i have a completely customizable desktop interface.....and i dont even have to delete my old one....
