Here a little bit of information for you. If you go through the exit of a store and the alarm goes of you do not have to stop and let them serch you or your bags. They have no right to stop you, the alarms go off to frequently for it to warrent a search or detention. I learned this when walmart started to have there greeters stop and serch everones bags. This held up everyone on there way out pissed me off so i searched into it a little. Once you pay for your items you have zero contractual obligation to the store. They cannot stop or arrest you. Let me restate that an alarm jsut goign off isnt enough evidance for them to stop or arrest you, in reality it isnt enough for the police to either due to the inaccuracy of the device. If they do stop you, detain you, and find stolen items on you its still a warrentless search and all evidance found in it is inadmissible in court.

As long as you are store property and they have reasonable doubt that you might have shoplifted, they can search to their hearts content.

I have had alarms go off on me several times, at Walmart, at Lowes, at Target, etc. Shit happens, every system has a flaw... but did I ever complain about their worry that I might have shoplifted something? No. They have alarm systems in place for a reason, and if one I set off I respect the fact that they might be concerned by it.

You, sir, are an idiot.

If your stupid enough to let a civilan search you, you are the idiot. Know the law and manupulate it to your needs.

I agree with Ghostfacekiller, maybe some time of security could hold you, but not a regular employee. And alarms have gone off on me plenty of times, even when I havent bought/stole anything.

Yeah. When you pay for something the magnetic strips inside of it are usually deactivated at the register. So if the alarm goes off they either think one of two things: 1. You payed for an item but they did not deactivate the strip. Or 2. You did not pay for something and that's why the strip was not deactivated.

No you, sir are an idiot.

If anyone other than law enforcement/security physically stops you to search you it is assault thus you can do whatever the fuck you want when leaving. Once the beeper goes off all that the employees of a store can do is ask you to stop and show them what you have or if you refuse to stop then they can call the cops, but if they physically stop you in any way it is assault and you can have them charged.

Actually guys, they can't stop you. Ghostfacekiller is right about that. As soon as you have tripped the alarm, but keep walking and proceed to leave the store and walk off the store property, they have reason to believe you have stolen something and can offer a description to the police, etc. Usually won't happen though.

Actually, the strip alarms are activated at the register. When you walk through the EAS system and the alarm is not activated, the alarm goes off because the magnetic field around the sensors near the door become unstable. Inside of those alarms is a ferromagnetic metal and when it is activated at the register, the magnetic field becomes the same as the EAS system near the door, which won't trigger the alarm.

Now you know.

Your welcome for the Necro..

Yeah but if the police stop you, do not consent to the search, otherwise it is admissable. Also, security doesn't have any right to do anything unless it's mall security, no rent-a-cop is gonna waste my time. Ahh, the wonders of indiscreetly showing people that you have a concealed weapon...so fulfilling.

Ok so here is my question why not just cut it or peal it off?

That would be great, but I think since most people on here are 13 (and/or) don't carry knives on them anymore that doesn't work for them. Plus that would only work for DVDs, for games you need to talk to an employee to open up the case for you and shit.

*JUST REMEMBERD THIS VERY IMPORTANT* I talked to an Target head of security, and most targets DO have UNDERCOVER officers. Not a battalion, but 2 on each shift. He also said that Targets have a security feature where the security camera monitor staff can press a button and it will close the 2 sliding doors. You will be stuck inbetween, and you can't escape because they usually have a uniformed guard by the door. So at Target, wait for them to wave you through if you set off the alarm, don't try to sprint for the exit.
