How can you deactivate the magnetic strips in DVDs and CDs? I figure a strong magnet should work to deactivate the magnet, but Im not sure how it works.

oh ok, well just get a powerfull magnet then, u can at like a hardware store. either a rare earth metal, or just a larger one. i used to use one my dad had to pick up nails and metal n shit areound a construction site, its about 6 inches wide and itll do the job.

Do you know if such a large magnet will set off the alarms?

yeah they wont set off the alarms, the in the security strip are magnetized a certain way, so as it passes through the detectors (wich switch pos and neg back and forth) causes the strip to be unstable, wich throws off the feild, setting off the alarm. a reg magnet will not set them aff cause they are stable.

It's true, I had a 1/2 by 2 by 2 inch neodynium m-5 true earth magnet in my pocket (stupid idea), and it didn't do anything.

Wouldnt using a magnet on hardware such as cds and such erase or just flat out ruin the cd itself?

the cd itself refracts the laser to read the data unlike tape decks that were read magnetically, the cd will be fine.

if you want to do this you get the mag then you swipe the stripe backwards right to left about 6 time over it that will deactive its charge so it will no longer react with the alarms 6 time is plenty and have to do it backwards if you do it left to right it was charge the reaction and that is the total opisite of what you want lol

Do you know what retailers use to effectively deactivate the mag strip in one swipe?

i dont kno the eact thing but it is a negtive magnet that is really power full that all it does is take the positive charge out of the stripe and dispose of it look around im sure you can find some where to buy one lol

Ok, how do you know which ways which, you fucking prick. They are rectangular, and don't have any markings, at least at the stores I go to, that tell the top apart from the bottom.

its not about what the look like or what is on them when i worked at tj maxx all thi was is a magnet in a plastic bracket and it you take apart the strips in side it will have a + side winch means it is a postive charge and to take away a positive charge you need a negitive charge earth magnets have more negitive than positive charge in them there are also bar magnets that will work use the negitive side of them..... by the way there is no need for the fucking prick non sense...saying that you probably dont have a job and are resorting to stealing....just what im impling from you ignorant comment

what the fuck does that mean?
a circuit goes however i choose to allow it to go.
also, as to the first question, there are no magnetic strips in dvds or cds. go do some research.

agreed -- please. join the 21st century.
The only portable media types that ever used magnetism are video tapes and their cousins, cassettes. CDs and DVDs and BluRay are all physically "burned" with a series of markings representing ones and zeros.
i won't flame at you cuz there's no reason too, but a bit of advice -- if you're going to steal something, learn about it before you do.
