Normally I'm pretty good about checking file sizes, names, etc on limewire to ensure that I don't get a virus. But I was looking for a program, and I was running out of time, so I just started downloading everything on the list, of course, I got a virus. I will now describe it:

I have windows vista, this windows says the operating system is booting, but I can't even reach the login screen.
All I get is a black screen with the white mouse cursor.
I can't use system restore, I have no restore points. I can use factory restore, but I need my computer files.
I can't open in safe mode, I can't open in safe mode with command prompt.
Let me reiterate, I need my files

Now, I called dell, but they wanted to charge me 239 for some plan I don't even want. I've been looking into linux live cd's, but I tried one, and it didn't work at all. If anybody has any idea on how I might fix this problem, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks. MikkyW.

PS: if you need any additional info, I'd be glad to help you.

try getting a live cd of ubuntu
then burning all the files you need
then reformatting because sounds like you are boned
haha that is why vista blows

Deathlard888 is correct ubuntu comes with the needed ntfs drivers. But if all else fails there are linux based live cd's just for this uses with more drivers preloaded. You will need 2 cd drives one burner and one plain cd driver to run the live cd off (mem stick anything to put the data). Or a spare HD to send the data to. I wouldn't recommend partitioning the drive at this point, don't do nothing except copy your data. any writing to the drive at this point could corrupt data.

Hmmm, thanks slowz! I have an 8 gig usb to put the data in. I already have 3 partitions. And I have ubuntu installed, but I forgot username and password (Yeah, stupid, I know it...) And about those linux live cd's, I tried one of them, and it had no effect, also, many of the other ones are outdated (ie. the most popular search query- bit defender.) by the time anyone responds to this, my computer should be on its' way to recovery, but before you close this up deathlord, give me time to see if it works, so I can hand out the appropriate thanks.
