So just today i heard about this amazing heist that took place October 3,
and it's a really good read, very interesting and true.

Bank robber hires decoys on Craigslist, fools cops
Posted by Caroline McCarthy

In an elaborate robbery scheme that's one part The Thomas Crowne Affair and one part Pineapple Express, a crook robbed an armored truck outside a Bank of America branch in Monroe, Wash., by hiring decoys through Craigslist to deter authorities.

It gets better: He then escaped in a creek headed for the Skykomish River in an inner tube, and the cops are still looking for him. "A great amount of money" was taken, Monroe police said, but did not provide a dollar value.

It appears to have unfolded this way, according to a Seattle-based NBC affiliate: around 11:00 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, the robber, wearing a yellow vest, safety goggles, a blue shirt, and a respirator mask went over to a guard who was overseeing the unloading of cash to the bank from the truck. He sprayed the guard with pepper spray, grabbed his bag of money, and fled the scene.

But here's the hilarious twist. The robber had previously put out a Craigslist ad for road maintenance workers, promising wages of $28.50 per hour. Recruits were asked to wait near the Bank of America right around the time of the robbery--wearing yellow vests, safety goggles, a respirator mask, and preferably a blue shirt. At least a dozen of them showed up after responding to the Craigslist ad.

"I came across the ad that was for a prevailing wage job for $28.50 an hour," one of the unwitting decoys, named Mike, said to the NBC station. As it turns out, they were simply placed there to confuse cops who were looking for a guy wearing a virtually identical outfit.

Authorities eventually found the getaway inner tube (a getaway inner tube!) and suspect that accomplices may have picked up the robber in a boat. According to the NBC affiliate, police hope to track him down by figuring out who posted the Craigslist ad in the first place.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark was not immediately available for comment.

i personally thought robbing banks was a thing of the past, because nowadays people really don't get away with that shit...
but this guy did.

it's also pretty interesting there were no fatalities, and because the police have no leads or anything.

There was a big debate about this article in comments on the page it was posted [link above]...

Some people say that guy deserved the money because he got away with it, some said he was a victim of the hard economy and the government steals more from us anyways, and some said he was a just criminal like any other.

What do you think?

I think he must have been a genius; his plan was perfect and he's still a free man to this day [as far as i know]... As to whether he was justified, i don't really know, nobody knows where this guy came from or anything, so you can't judge from his motive..

But let's discuss the ethics of this all, as well as the awesomeness. :D

That's brilliant, really brilliant. Reminds me of "Inside man" when the dressed all the hostages up as criminals so they could hide among them. And that movie had no fatalities if I remember correctly. Hell, they could make a movie out of this now, or at least a short film.

Ethically, of course it was wrong, but I think if they ever do catch him they should give him a light sentence for being so creative.

That is simply genious but hopefully he had a minimal amount of knowledge about ip tracking or tracking on his craigslist account. if he did he should be alright, and if he was smart he could have posted it on craigslist from an outside source, ie a public library so if the 5-0 does track it they'll track a library ^.^, and to get use on the computers he could have made a false id card for the library

i don't think it mentioned it in this particular article, but apparently he used a local cyber cafe to post the craigslist info.

he left no trace whatsoever.

this reminds me of a robbery in france, where 3 men dug a tunnel through the sewers, using electricity from street lanterns to power their tools. when they were done digging the tunnel they got in at night, grabbed the money and got out of the country. that's the perfect crime, since nobody suffers. the money is insured so only the insurance company loses money, but that's their job, kinda.

if you are smart enough to take something in grand fashion and truly get away with it then you are totally justified in doing so.

after all, if the people guarding it were smarter they would have not let it happen right?

i agree this was a great idea.. but... to the few of you calling him a genius, i disagree. This just sounds like one of those conversations u would here at a bar full of guys.. someone says "whats the best way to rob a bank" and everyone starts bouncing ideas off each other. This might not have even been this guys idea.

No.. what makes this story special to me is that the guy had the nutz to do it. I dont think i have it in me to try something like that, but this guy did. I say hats off to him for having the courage to give it a try. I cant even imagine how much of an adrenaline rush that gave him. wow.

Was it justified? i guess no one really knows because we dont know his situation. I have done plenty of stealing in my life, and I regret all of it. I wouldnt do it. Now, If I had a family to support and had no job or money, well, i just dont know. anything is possible i guess

So I say: If he is using the money to feed his kids then he deserves it in my opinion. You have to do what you have to do for your kids. But if he is a single guy with a job and just has nothing to do with his time but be stupid and rob a bank, well I say 'fuck him'
