Due to the content of the book and the popularity of this book, I'm sure plenty of people have comments to make on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson :)

Personally, I love this book and the movie is not half bad, obviously the book is wayy better.

Raoul Duke: [narrating] We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like:
Raoul Duke: I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive.
Raoul Duke: [narrating] Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Raoul Duke: Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?
[swatting the air]
Raoul Duke: Huh! Huh! Huh! Fucking pigs.
Dr. Gonzo: Did you say something?
Raoul Duke: Hm? Never mind. It's your turn to drive.
Raoul Duke: [narrating] No point in mentioning these bats, I thought. Poor bastard will see them soon enough.

i love the beginning...

"What? No. We cant stop here. This is Bat Country!"

so many good lines(one more)...

"No more of that talk or I'll put the fucking leeches on you, understand?"

if you have actually done acid it makes the book so much better because you can actually relate to how fuckd up his brain prosses was. but as for the movie johhny depp nailed the part. I just did a speech on hunter s thompson, theres so many cool things about him... but as far as the book i would recomend reading it to anyown who has done acid, if not then it might not make a whole lot of sense and the movie might be better for you... also a good one is where the buffalo roam, staring bill mury.
knowing that both johnny depp and bill murry were good friends with Hunter s kinda explains alot

here is a speech i gave on him

“We were somewhere around barstool at the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls." Hunter S Thompson Fear and loathing in Los Vegas
Hunter Stockton Thompson was born in Louisville Kentucky on July 18, 1937 or 1939 depending on which day you asked him, he changed it a lot with his different names. When he was 11 years old his father died and his mother became a heavy drinker… which will probably explain a lot of what I’m about to tell you. He excelled in sports, particularly baseball, he was a great pitcher. But never joined high school teams. It is in high school where he started his writing career as a school journalist but was later kicked out due to his bad antics. Thompson was later excepted into the Anthenaeum Literary Association, which is considered a very high honor, but again was later kicked out, due to felony charge. The felony charge was for accessory to robbery. Thompson and some friends were driving around when his friends decided to rob a liquor store, Thompson waited in the car and did not notify the police which is a felony charge. Thompson later joined the Air Force but yet again was kicked out. Thompson received an honorable discharge, he was considered a bad influence and a hazard to his fellow soldiers. After that he decided to go back to his writing…. He was rejected by absolutely every place in the country… He was a nobody that couldn’t get a job any where… So he went to write for a south American paper for the small population that spoke English down there. Which only lasted 2 years. In his later years he assumed the identity Dr. Gonzo. Gonzo or gonzagas is an Italian word for absurdities. He later coined the term Gonzo journalism which is characterized by the use of quotes, sarcasm, humor, exaggeration, and profanity. Then he produced his 2 most famous books Hells Angels and Fear in loathing in las vegas. Hells angels was a feared biker gang in California that Thompson followed along with. He was the first and only reporter to infiltrate the gang. He did so for about a year before he received a savage beating which they called a “stomping” it happened because they realized that Thompson was going to make money off of the report and they wanted part of the cut. Fear and Loathing in las vegas was basically his journey in las vegas. He was sent to report a police academy convention but due to the amount of acid and ether he did it ended up just a rumbling mess of being kicked out of hotels and his search to find the “American dream” which was nothing more then an idea he came up with while on acid. In his middle years Thompson ran for sheriff in Pitcon county Colorado… some of his big platforms were the decriminalization of drugs, Thompson wasn’t for the profiteering of drugs but didn’t mind doing them himself. He was a big supporter of the privacy acts, mainly due to all of his drugs. And he was also a supporter of the 2nd amendment. Thompson was a huge gun collector, along with his peacock collection. In the end he lost by a small margin. After losing he decided to continue his writing where he made the movies Fear and loathing in las vegas staring Johnny depp and where the buffalo roam staring Bill Murry. Both of which had to follow along with Thompson for a long period of time to try to master this complex character. They all ended up becoming very good friends. The death of Thompson was suicide or murder no one really knows. But it happened on feb 20 2005 "No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. *****g. I am always bitchy. No Fun — for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax — This won't hurt." Letter from Hunter S to his wife 4 days before How ever Paul Robberts one of Thompsons very good friends received a phone call the night before the event and this is his story."Hunter telephoned me on February 19, the night before his death. He sounded scared. It wasn't always easy to understand what he said, particularly over the phone, he mumbled, yet when there was something he really wanted you to understand, you did. He'd been working on a story about the World Trade Center attacks and had stumbled across what he felt was hard evidence showing the towers had been brought down not by the airplanes that flew into them but by explosive charges set off in their foundations. Now he thought someone was out to stop him publishing it: "They're gonna make it look like suicide," he said. "I know how these bastards think..." Paul Robberts
On Aug 20 2005 was Thompsons funeral he always wanted to be shot out of a cannon so he was. Some of the high profile celebrities that attended were U.S. Senator John Kerry and former U.S. Senator George McGovern; 60 Minutes correspondents Ed Bradley and Charlie Rose; actors Jack Nicholson, Bill Murray, Sean Penn, and Josh Hartnett; singers Lyle Lovett, John Oates and numerous other friends. An estimated 280 people attended the funeral. All of which was funded by Thompsons dear friend Johnny Depp
I’m going to leave you with some of Thompsons favorite sayings.
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro,""Buy the ticket, take the ride,"
"Too weird to live, too rare to die,"
"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."

Interesting trivia, Flea fron the chili peppers in in the movie. He's the hippie in the bathroom of the matrix. You know the "all this white stuff on my sleeve..." scene.

Flea is also in the big lebowski. Hmm, I think I watch that now. :)

This is from the movie where the buffalo roam. If you don't know why this is related to fear and loathing you should. And no this isn't from memory.

Well I guess if I had to swear one way or another, I'd say Lazlo wasn't insane. He just had very strange rhythms. But he stomped on the terra. Lord Buckley said that. It's hard to say he got what he deserved, because he never really got anything, at least not in this story. And right now, this story is all we have ... It's sad. But what's really sad is it never got weird enough for me. I moved to the country when the boat got too crowded. Then I learned that President Nixon had been eaten by white cannibals on an island near Tijuana for no good reason at all. Golly, you hear a lot of savage and unnatural things about people these days. Lazlo and Nixon are both gone now, but I don't think I'm going to believe that 'til I can gnaw on their skulls with my very own teeth. Fuck those people, huh? If they're out there, I'm going to find them, and I'm going to gnaw on their skulls. Because it still hasn't gotten weird enough for me.

Buddha

And one more.

Super sunday. Dawn. My recollections of the last twelve hours are very dim. All that I know for certain is that shortly after I checked in, two third-world drug abusers dressed as hotel employees forced their way into my room; ransacked it, drank all my liquor, did all my drugs, stole my dinner. The security precautions aren't beefed up at this hotel; I'm looking for safer accomodations. It's a sad state of affairs when this reporter has to go heavily armed to breakfast
