I don't know if this really belongs in the hacking section, but it was the best place i thought to put it. So, I want to create a website, but i don't want to pay a host and i don't want to register with a crappy free host that will just put ads everywhere. This may sound stupid, but is it possible to have a website without a host?

depends on how active you want your website to be
you might just be better off investing in a host

what if i want it to be active? Is it a bigger downside for me to be the host?

thanks everybody, unfortunatley it looks like hosting my own web site costs me more. If there is a way to avoid paying money, (yes i know it's pretty close to impossible without having severe consequences) let me know.

No-IP (http://www.no-ip.com/) - Free DNS (sort of your choice)
XAMPP or LAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/) - Apache MySQL PHP PHP5 (personal webhosting made like your mother)

Unfortunately, i don't know any programming languages. I know really basic stuff in ruby, not anything substantial enough to help me really.

ya you have a ton to learn before you host a sight
grab a book on HTML and one on CSS and get reading unless you plan on having someone else write the site for you

dude you can totally make website without knowing a programming language. just go to freewebs.com and you should be able to find what you need from there. if you know enough about HTML to make a myspace you can make a website at freewebs.com
My first "website" i made was with freewebs, although i'll tell you now, nobody is going to buy anything from your website unless you buy a domain name. and even then you've really got to put a lot of work into it to get even one sale. (especially you since you don't know how to program)
if you were just looking to make a quick buck because you found one of those affiliate T-shirt websites then I suggest you give up now. There are a few ways to make money with the internet but T-shirts is not one i'd reccomend

ya he plans on having one selling shirts
i dont think anyone is giving there paypal or credit card info to a website that has the free webs logo in the top left

Ok, forget i said anything about starting a website for free or hosting it myself.
What i really need is a website that will get me good sales. Do you have any info on that?

well you can buy an established website... or buy a startup and start advertising
I doubt you have the skills to make one yourself though
you could buy my website if you want :)

You do need some kind of host, Being your own computer or a remote host. Hosting website at home really has its draw backs. But i want go into detail about that.
Basically if you really want to have a website, take it serious and get a host. You don't pay a host. Many offer web space in exchange for links on your site. Including me. If your interested dont PM me here. email me at kevin.scranton at gmail dot com and we can figure out something.

would you host anyone's website? including mine?
I'd be more than happy to exchange a little space on a website for free hosting

Sure,
All you need is a domain name, I dont sponser hosting with a sub domain. This is real hosting with Cpanel or lxadmin not some free host that rips all the features out of the plan. The best way to catch me. being i dont get this site much is open a pre sales ticket at

anything other than godaddy, it sucks. Additionally, t35.com is an amazing free host.
