i don't believe in the whole end of the world thing.....i heard the end of the calender and such translated to mean large scale change and such, not totally the end of the world. more of a drastic change in the world. that seems to be already happening, so i don't think that interpretation is too far fetched.

I think there are many possible reasons that they could have predicted this, none resulting in the end of the world.
-Crazy people go on riots causing mass hysteria.
-Earth is somehow ready for its magnetic flip
-and since we haven't found all the crystal skulls we are going to get a solar flare and die lol
-Major change in the way we live
-Major War
-Epidemic, its about time that some country got pissed off and released their super viruses.
-Global scale national disaster.
-NOTHING.
but people are stupid and i do expect riots.

Well, as for it being the end of the world, no I don't believe it. However, I do think the date does have some significance, but I don't believe it will mark the end of the world, but it might mark the end of the world as we know it. It seems to reason that something of great importance will happen on this day that will change the world, but what it is no one knows. This date could just mark the passing of a comet; which in ancient times was a bad omen, but it could also mark the day at which the earth may be hit by a comet which would spell doom for us all.

The mayans never said that the world was going to end. The calendar was based off of astrological effects and events that took place. They were excellent at predicting events because they knew what caused them. For example they predicted many earthquakes, I believe they predicted the one that caused the fire in SF, tsunamis, and other things. I do not believe that they have been wrong on any of these events. With this in mind one can assume that the end of the calendar would mark an event that changes the whole world. This is why there is the whole magnetic flip theory. This is because such an event could possibly destroy the world not because of it itself but because of how people react to it.
For example if people's compasses started to point in another direction some people wouldn't know which way was north. The event could make planes fall from the sky because their navigation and all other electrical systems fail. People could take this as the sign of the apocalypse, thus causing high hysteria rates and world chaos.
Now I'm not saying that the magnetic flip is going to happen or that anything is going to happen, all I am saying is that anything is possible. The Mayans could have predicted that they would be long gone by then and saw no point in furthering it.
(all the facts about the mayans are to the best of my knowledge and if you do know more or I have made a mistake please correct me. All I ask is that you don't be an idiot or an ass.)
Wasn't the millennium virus the whole issue of Y2k. They are not two separate events but one. Two is not a large enough list to say, and the list goes on (nor is three).

but from what i have read when the world does do its flip flop motion there are several thoughts on what couldhappen, (im not saying i think any of them will happen but this is what i have heard) polor ice caps ***t = world flood, kicked out of our normal rotation around the sun which we are such delicate creatures that just a little bit could mess up are ecosystem, the flip would effect the volcanoes.

We should all agree on a date now that the world will be destroyed that's somewhere in the far future, that way our descendants can worry about another lame death day while we sit in out graves laughing out asses off.
Let's go ahead and go with 01/02/3004. Yes, on that day the world will "end".

There has been over 900 dates the world was supposed to end, did any of them happen? Fuck no. Just watch, this date is going to roll over just like any other damn day, just like Y2K, And there is going to be millions of dumb asses making themselves look even stupider.
Fuck the Mayans, the reason why the calender ends on December 21, 2012 because they got fucking slaughtered by some other shithead beaners.
Do we make calenders thousands of fucking years into the future? To an extent yes, the Mayans just stopped on that day.
Just my 2 cents......

I think it's a really interesting event to be sure, if you've done your homework on the matter you'd know it isn't only the mayan calendar, but about a combination of 50 other prophets that have predicted something "big" to happen on that date.
Not to mention that if you look at the current state of our planet 20 years ago, and its progression over the years, you'd see that over the past 10 years, the world has gotten drastically worse. Outbreaks of new diseases, over 50 armed conflicts all over the world, genocides, an EXPONENTIAL growth in the apperance of natural disasters, the serious threat of a nuclear war, etc. the list goes on.
Oh ya, also scientists have also discoered that on the edge of our solar system there's a black hole, and on 21/12/12 we're going to be at the center of our solar system, making an eclipsing, a lot of scientists don't know how significant this could be, but some people it could result in a total polar shift (north goes south, south goes north) if you don't know what that means, it just means bad news.
I'm not saying that I believe it's the end of the world, but I do think that within the next decade or so something big will happen, or maybe a new awakening in how we think, or maybe another step in evolution, who knows.

Personally I think nothing really big will happen, but people are probably going to panic at the first insignificant "wierd" thing they see.
I remember seeing a thing on TV about this. I believe there was something about a planitary wobble the earth does. On that date, the earth's axsis completes a wobble, which takes a very long time to do. Also, on that day the sun lines up with the center of our galaxy. This was all on the History Channel, so I'm not sure how accurate it is.
Here is a link to what I saw(Go to about 26:20 into the video, thats where is says what I'm talking about.):

It is the end of the current sun cycle, I believe 1/5 the circumference of the sun's travel around the center of the galaxy. Each cycle is little over 5000 years long, the last end is what saw the extinction of the Maya. The prediction is of global events, whether catastrophic or not is unclear. However, studiers of the Maya conclude that Oct 28, 2011 marks the end of creation cycles, as in evolution being complete, and making reference to universal consciousness, or enlightenment.
If 2012 marks the end of anything, it is of earthly matters, and not the human race. I don't believe in anything till there's proof, but I do hope some shit goes down.

the world wont end in 2012. People always use the excuse that but the earth and the sun come into perfect alignment that day and than the earth will wobble on its axis, but whats funny is that every year on December 21 the earth will wobble on its axis. The earth has been wobbling on that day basically since the beginning of the earth, so the earth won't end. just watch it here. http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2009/02/the-world-will.html
