Lets talk about the end of days. Now before you start bring up religion....I'd like to leave that out of this thread if you don't mine. Because I've never really considered the end of the world of man to be the true end of days. Space is just to large to be effected by the fate of our small little planet. Why would something create an entire universe if it only intended in populating it in a small section. The true end of days would be the destruction of the universe as a whole. During my long hours of watching the discovery channel and the learning channel I saw several specials that focused on this subject and they presented 3 possible ways for the universe to end.
The first goes along the lines of the big bang was the beginning of the universe, and some time in the future the energy from the big bang which makes our universe continue to expand will run out and gravity will pull everything back together resulting in another big bang. Suggesting that the big bang is both the death and rebirth of the universe.
The second one was kinda similar to the first except it suggested that our universe is expanding at a pace that is way to fast for gravity to regain control and our universe will rip itself into shreds. Although this wouldn't kill the universe until everything was to far apart for new systems to be born.
The final idea revolved around the fact that our galaxy is on a current collision course with a smaller galaxy. Normally this wouldn't be a bad thing except for the fact that like our galaxy the other one also has a super massive black hole in its center. Some scientist theorize that once these two black holes meet they'll actually fuse and gain enough strength to pull the other galaxy into them eventually destroying everything.
So how do you think it will end?
Personally I think the 1st or 3rd way is more possible than the universe ripping itself into shreds and just drifting into nothingness, but that's just me.

I think that the universe will end due to spontaneous unexistence. Everything will just stop existing. (likeliness in our lifetime very miniscule)
Maybe we'll hit a celestial cord or something, or someone will build a huge penning trap to store antimatter, and just absolutely obliterate the earth with it.

the first theory sounds about right

The point about earth being destroyed not really meaning shit is a valid one..

im pretty sure they've said the first theory wont happen, or thats its extre***y unlikley.
never actually really thought about the end of the universe.
oh actually heres one thing that could fuck the universe up royaly
the Large Hardron Collider.
if it works, either therell be another big bang, probably wipeing out everything, or a black hole could form, or a worm hole, or strange matter.
FUCK THE SWISS!!!!!

Its highly unlikely that that machine will be able to create enough material and condense it down to where their is another big bang. A black hole would only form if it created a star large enough and caused it to undergo a supernova. I'm not to worried about that machine....the worst I think that will happen is their first use it will overheat and an untold ammount of money will be wasted. That would be an intresting thing to read about.

I'm pretty sure this is it referred to as the "Big Crunch".

Red:
This is know as the "Big Crunch" theory, and the majority of scientists agree that this is not one of the possible ends to the universe. This is because of the recent evidence that the universe is actually speeding up instead of slowing down, and seeing as it is not slowing down the "Big Crunch" has been dropped as one of the possible ends to the universe.
Blue:
This is, at the moment, the most probable end to the universe; However, it will take trillions of years for this to happen, and seeing as this has such a massive time scale there are an infinite number of things that could happen before the universe has passes the point of no return--the point at which the expansion of the universe is unstoppable. Theoretically it is possible to stop the expansion of the universe, but I don't feel like explaining such a complex concept at this time.
Green:
Nope, that scenario is a physical impossibility because of the sheer mass required to create enough gravity to pull the entire universe in. If you need it explain in further detail just ask.

OK first off I'd like to complement who ever tagged this thread. It goes to show me that even in the Enlightened Individuals there are people who don't have the iq to figure out that 2+2 does not equal fish and a piece of string. Secondly I'd like to thank Shanx and Deo for naming the theories...now I can go research them more, but I'm a little troubled about how we think that space expansion is actually speeding up. X amount of years ago we were sure the the earth was flat, that we were the center of the universe and we were alone. Now with the passage of time and every year bringing 200 answers and 200,000 questions...where certain that were neither flat nor the center of the universe...and that popular question of are we alone...has been replaced by where the fuck are they? I think with more research and better technology it will probably turn out that we think its speeding up because were getting better and better at seeing outside our own solar system and is actually at a stable pace. Four years from now assuming that the Mayan calendar is wrong and were still around I guarantee you that their will by a whole new array of theories and ideas that will all have some new way for the universe to end. Also Deo the 3rd one was sorta assumeing that other galaxys had supermassive blackholes aswell and that would just continue grow as more and more were collected.

That was based on the assumption that other super massive black holes would be included in the process. However, the reason I said it's impossible is that the super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy will eventually evaporate because it is constantly releasing Hawking radiation at an ever increasing speed. This is true for all black holes, and this is why I deemed that scenario impossible.

Deo, that was excellently put. I could not have explained it any better if I had the reigns of Google at my fingertips.
Everything that has a beginning has an end. Therefore, I do think that the universe will one day end. However, I will not be alive to see the day, ergo I do not care.
