i believe that through all the shit that we go through, some self inflicted, other shit inflicted by others perceptions of reality and society. people belief in gods and heavens and paridises, to have something to look forward to. and ive noticed some religions say that the wealthy should give to the poor, so life is equally hard for everybody, and you dont get to go to the good side of the after life. so it plays mindgames and TRIES to force equality, but it dosent work, because the hard workers and physical laborors work for wha half presidents of urinal companys make, but we need the physical laborors for vital things, like lumber, oil, minerals, crops. which is why the pyhsical laborors should get paid more(that deseve it). and thus forth, people belive in religion to comfort their harsh lives after they die so they have something to look forward to

ya pretty much, that and basically because we can't deal with death and life. we as people seem to need a reason for everything.
"a myth of a meaning so lost and forgotten".... yes i bring lamb of god lyrics into many philosophical discussions

I've heard your view on religion before and yes it does work that way in some religions. I'll admit, I'm christian. I like to know that I can look forward to something like you mentioned. But I don't believe in the organized aspect like church because those try to force you to give and be pure and honest. I don't think you HAVE to give to get anywhere after life, and I don't believe that you have to be perfect either. Although, I do believe I'm going to end up getting ripped on for posting all this :P

You are a perfect example of why public education is a bad thing.....jk :p
What I could discern from your post is that you believe the reason that people believe in religion is to find some comfort in their otherwise harsh lives. This is a given truth; any person, no matter what the circumstances, when confronted with a struggle or hardship will most often look to religion, or in some cases even find religion, in a effort to ease the pain. This is because we have a psychological need to control our lives, and when we cannot gain control we often look to religion to do it for us; as the old saying goes, "it's in Gods hands now."

Religion explains what science can't, thats why religion is less and less relevent as time moves along. sure i'm all for love, caring and understanding i just don't want to kneel or pray or abstain from anything in this life for fear of what may be in the next.

haha c73 is talking about me.... i try to explain to her all the time that EVER SINGLE major religion is simply a way to explain things that people could not (BTW there is an intire topic like this somewhere barried in the political forum)
but lets think about it for a while people thought there was a sun god racing across the sky in a chariot well now we can prove that isnt true. to be compleatly honest (and sorry if it offends any one) but christianit sounds like some one 2008 years ago had an affair wound up nocked up and came up with an excuse.
and as for numerator s post i compleatly agree im dragged to church by c73 almost every week and i have learned a few things, one that the pastor is on some sort of drugs because hes talking about sheep changing lightbubls but 2 that in the begining of every church servous its nothing more then a self bashing speech.... people actualy say they are not worthy and that im a sinner and a bunch of bull shit like that... and 3 that we are supose to fear god and yet he is the all mersiful one...... sounds kinda oxymoron ish doesnt it?

I cant really just go on bout what i think on this subject, because its to hard for me to find the words i want to say in just the right way... but what little i feel i can say is religion nowadays is bullshit and i cant stand most of it. It hurt to think of the people out there who go on and on about it, and look down on others, when its obvious in the way they talk that they are just tryin to convince themselves into believing it, or that they are just reciting something that has been put into thier heads.
I have a stepmom who is a christan by her own words, yet there is no one else on this world when talkin to who i think is so far off. She actually went and said to me that the bible says "we had to be seprate" cause i didnt want to go to church with her and my dad. haha i laughed so hard. She didnt seem to get that there was no way i was gonna let her force me and then just have me resent something i had no business with wanting to resent, and am not ready to accept in anyform or maybe never will be. So now i am no longer allowed to see my father or brother and sister til i am "saved"
Yea as far as i can guess religion was made to keep people warm at night in thier sleep because of how dark and scary the world must of been to them with not knowin alot of the things we know today. plus can we really be excepts to believe that after all the translateing and the passing down over so many years that the bible is infact every bit it was then i mean seriously?? i cant believe that. And one last thing even if it is who are those who preach about it so sure that what they say is whats meant from what they read i think they are retard and just because they thing they can interpret it one way doesnt mean it is the way.
SORRY DONT EVEN READ ALL THAT!!! i want to deleted now but i wont

the new testament gospels were written some 100 years after jesus died based on stories passed down orally. can those stories really be trusted?
the basis of organised religion is organise and control the masses. back in the renaissance the kings bowed down to the pope and to this day the catholic church is an absurdly wealthy tax exempt organisation.

I agree with this 100%. If you've ever played the game Telephone with friends, then you've seen how easily stories can be changed when passed down by word of mouth. ;)
To get back on topic though, the views of religion on death and the afterlife stem from the natural instinct of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of death itself, and many other worldly fears are all factors that play into why people hide behind a religion. Frankly, I think it's stupid. If we could change our future by just "believing", then the world would be a perfect place already.

Dark-...thats totally the way i feel bout everything that is said bout religion that its just a big telephone game that started off like "Hi my names Bob and i like to make things" to like ..."So there is this god and he like made everything"
haha and as the that thing witht he grandfather talkin bout how if there is not god then boat blah blah goin up goind down blah blah.....but see if there isnt a god then there are people out there who are wasting a majority of thier life away...thats how i see it

I believe there is a GOD who set things into motion. But as ItsAPoorlyKeptSecret said some people are wasting their time.
As afterlife goes there have been so many stories of ghosts and seeing the light that maybe there is something after death mainly I support this is because there is so much energy and emotion in humans where does it go? Maybe into a free moving body of energy such as a ghost possibly reliving there lives or doing as they please.
Yea that was a big rant of bullshit but I had to say it.

I used to think about what will happen when i die until i realized that I was wasting my time. I don't know about you guys, but i'm pretty sure that i will never know what happens until I die, and that sucks because i want to know, but I dont want to die. I think that we arent sopposed to know what happens, because that would mean no one would care about death. For example, if we could see our future, we would never act on our own because no matter what we would know what would happen. So i really have no theory on death because i really juist cant think of one that makes sense. I do have a theory on religion though.
I think that the people who wrote the bible know what they were talking about, but they had to dumb it down so people would understand them and so people would listen to them. They used the stories to get people to not be assholes and respect eachother. Later on, people took it too seriously and started wars over it. The popes and the church in the middle ages used christianity for power and wealth, and they probably didnt believe any of it, they just told people "if you dont do what I say and pay massive amounts of taxes, you will burn in hell for eternity". Nowdays, people still take religion too serious. Like i said before, its just stories that have lessons to make people respect eachother, not hate eachother over minor differences in belief. Science proved many things wrong in the bible, but the bible wasnt meant to be true. Its just people like the Landover Baptists that are too retarded to understand the meaning of religion and just take it word for word.
